Is there anyone who honestly like modern art just purely from the way it looks? I honestly think the only reason people say they like it, is because they want to appear intellectual. To me, art is all about effort. The amount of work and skill the artist puts into it should be reflected in their work.

But what if someone took lots of efforts while making something, but when he finished it, his art looks worse than average?

I always liked some modern art a lot. Even when I was a kid I just found some of it really aesthetically pleasing.
Oversimplification IMO, a finished product can be art regardless of the process, and the process in general shouldn't justify something that doesn't look good (like period blood that dripped on a canvas).

….Also, there are actual objective 'goods' and 'bads' within the arts that is why things like figure skating and competitive dancing is a thing. Actually, I quite like the look of both classic art and modern art. Of course, it varies from painting to painting/piece to piece, but overall I would say that it really isn't about the category the art is in. Mondriaan and Rietveld are both modern artists from "De Stijl" and I actually really like the things they make. Its obviously very modern and abstract, yet it looks so sleek and stylish. I quite like it. I also like impressionism and surrealism and some paintings here and there from other categories. But to me it's just really a piece by piece thing whether or not I'll enjoy something. (I would also say that effort doesn't result in good art, but it does increase the chances of creating good art. But it's really just about the end product, the process is pretty much irrelevant unless it is something that you can find in the actual piece itself.)

I was out for a walk today, saw this statue. While it is an abstract piece, I still like it. The finished product clearly shows that some serious work went into it.
