It's pretty simple: you share libraries and code that you modify. Obviously software that's interacted with APIs, you don't have to share. If you don't modify, you technically don't have to share, and modifying configuration files is not modification because configuration files are not copyrightable. It's analagous to simple geometric shapes, not copyrightable.
It's also not hard to set up a post-commit hook that automatically mirrors your fucking repository, in any case. They just don't want to release the source. They're a backwater outsourcing firm that think web CRUD is valuable intellectual property.

It works quite well, but it's shit.

It's constantly loading board indices and the global report queue and looking for fixed strings and md5 hashes of files (which are generated by the site). It also uses OCR on globally reported images, but nowadays that rarely catches anything.

It's pretty much a manually maintained glorified word filter. Anyone who really cared would have no trouble getting past it. Luckily none of the spammers do.

Imageboards are dead, you can't have a nice niche imageboard without normalfags ruining it. It's time to move on to textboards that'll last a good 10 years before normalfags find out about them.

IRC also had a way to share files with other users; I got many animus that way before Rapidshare became fansub's preferred method.
