Well consider the other romances that Bryan and Michael had written in the past. Mai and Zuko had no buildup outside of Zuko being a childhood friend of hers and she just being nice to him when no one was. Then Sokka and Yue, who got together in a single episode after Sokka listens to her complain about her life. All he really did was lent a good ear when she needed it.

Makorra is pretty self-explanitory, and Bolin and Opal was really flat and executed too fast. Bolin just goes after her because she's pretty and nice and she reciprocates his feelings because he's nice and funny.

Really the only "developed" relationship in the show was Aang and Katara. But only after like, three seasons and because while Aang was instantly in love with Katara, she had to grow to love him in that way. Everyone else just sorta already has feelings or loves you just because you're nice.

It's kinda weird how these dudes like to write romance so much yet are pretty shit at it. Also Korrasami suffered from only starting to become an idea in season 3. Makorra was supposed to be endgame, but then no one liked it and the shows was renowed for more seasons. It's a writer's nightmare to try and make a show while the character is in a real steady relationship (especially for a kid's show). That's why they save it for the end, otherwise they're gonna have to dedicate more screentime to the relationship and if they don't it would be pointless to even have it, you can only get away with this in comedy (Like South Park, where Wendy has been Stan's GF for a ton of seasons now, yet it almost never matters) and when romance is not the focus or even an important part of the history. But romance is a very important part of the avatar series.

So anyway Makorra got dropped because of the writers putting themselves in a corner with it, not knowing what to do with these characters in a relationship, and because there was more people agasin't it that with it, so there was no point in keeping it.

So they started the Korrasami thing so get some credit despite making a rather mediocre series. But they did put some build up, it's just that it was Avatar-tier weak romance and the fandom for that pairing only started to form for real in the final season, so there wasn't that much buzz around it, espiecially on Holla Forums, but there was plenty on Tumblr and Twitter.

It was pretty obvious where it was going. Bryke wasn't bringing Asami back just to be Korra's gal-pal, and the direction they were taking with them was obvious. It got about as much screentime and buildup as the rest of the Avatar ships sans Aang and Katara, but that's because that was decided from the start, whereas Korra and Asami only started to get in the works during season 3.

I would've been okay with Korrasami had they at least established in the prior seasons that they'd patched things up after the whole Mako cheating on Asami deal. It'd still feel forced, but I could brush it off the same way I did Aang and Katara. But they never really established that the two gave a shit about each other and it always seemed to me that they only tolerated each other because they had mutual friends in Mako and Bolin. Then, out of nowhere in S3, they get all google-eyed with each other as if they'd been secretly scissoring the entire series.

They brushed that off in the worst way possibly. A five minute scene in the opening of season three.

And that was how they brushed off the clusterfuck that was season one and two. I kinda feel bad that Asami's entire character was reworked into being Korra's loyal waifu out of nowhere despite Korra fucking her life up in season one and not really giving a shit about any of her problems till the very last moment. Sure Asami didn't have that much character to begin with and it's clear Bryke had no idea where to take her character.

Her whole pourpouse of existing was to extend the romance drama in season one and so there would be more vagina on the team. Bolin had a similar problem in that he always had fuck all to do with the main plot, but at least Bryke tried to write him some non-romantic stuff after season one. Asami got stuck as just romance filled, passed around like a battered slut from Mako to Korra. I mean Asami never even complains to Mako or Korra again, he just calls out Mako once at the finale, and he acts like a huge cunt about it. Dude either Asami is way too fucking nice or she has some serious issues, probably something to do with not wanting to be alone and having real friends.

I forgot to complete that sentence. I meant despite her having little character, it's still pretty awful to put you up with one of the characters that cucked you and made you irrelevant and said character not really making up for it first. At least Mako helped her with her troubles in season two. Hell Asami is the one that apologizes, and Korra is just like "I'm sorry for that too Asami"

And Asami made up for trying to cuck her out of Mako back in season two by being genuinely sorry and supporting her through most of season three. Korra does nothing to make up for the stuff she did until season four, and then all she does is write her a letter and invite her on a vacation.

Yeah, after all that happened, there should've been a lingering tension between Asami and Korra that could've become a sideplot leading to Korra apologizing and the two of them being friends. Instead we got a really awkward situation where they want us to believe that Asami would willingly hang out with her asshole ex and his cunt girlfriend despite both of them treating her like dirt and never making up for it.
This is why I wish they'd either cut out all the relationship crap or had Korra fuck Bolin. Still would've been a poorly written romance, but there'd probably be a bit less drama since no one cared about Bolin, including Bryke.

I remember when the season one finale aired. Holla Forums went batshit, as did Tumblr and Twitter. Everyone except makorra shippers in Devianart hated it. The whore board was Korra threads for a while. It was fucking wild. And then after everyone calmed down and we went from the entire board to just four or five Korra threads, I think that's when those posts were made. That is what opened my mind to a Korra/Asami relationship at first, and it's what made what happened in season four good for me. Because Asami finally got a break and Korra for once didn't make a terrible decision. But I cannot enjoy season four since it's basically pretending season one and two didn't exist.

What I understand is that Bryke thought they were getting one season, and thus why everything on season one was so self-contained and rushed. And then when Nick ordenedered more seasons, and that's when they started actually planning things out. However season two is just really fucking shit. In every single way. It shits on the lore, the characters, the setting, the animation. It's just terrible. They fucked up, I can tolerate a few bad episodes, but a season? It just ruins the rest. Especially since season two did end being very important to season three and four. Yet they ignore everything that happened character wise. The history elements are addresed and become important to the plot (Harmonic covergeance, The Vines covering RC, Varrick's research, etc) but everything the characters did to eachother is forgotten and reset. There is no resolution.

You know..if someone made a follow up to LoK (good luck with that), I'd say the first retcon would've been Wan's story. Have it be that Wan is full of shit and none of the background stuff actually happened and the Raava and Vaatu thing was because Wan fucked up badly and he's covering his ass.

Also, at least Bolin got a nice girlfriend that actually respects him and had some non-romantic stuff side-plots. In season two he was made into a goof and reduced to comedy plots (As Eska's and Varrick's butt monkey), but like I said, season two was just awful to everyone. But on season three Bolin got Opal and had the Lavabending subplot with him, it's kind of a shame that they gave him such a cool skill despite knowing they'll be barely using said skill in anything meagniful after season three.

But I mean, compared to what Asami got… Bolin had it better. Asami had two things in season four, Korra and her father, and the later was just so they could create even more pain for her after they killed him. It was so blatanly obvious what they were doing. I knew it as soon as he started being nice to her and Asami was actually having a good time with him. They sorta tried to make a subplot about Asami and her managing of the company, making that new infrastructure for the Vine infused city, but since Bryke can't write Asami for shit they just threw it off and went with the "Father reconcilation" plot.

And when you look back on it, they never explain why Asami had feelings for Korra, she just… did, for reasons unknow. I can understand why Korra could have them for Asami. She's nice and supportive and is always there for her (Well at least after season two, she's nice enough in season one but banishes from season two mid-way.) and Korra is rather simple minded and not that picky. After all, she fell for Mako just based on his good looks and being a decent firebender. But why would Asami have feelings for Korra? She does nothing for her other that be a basic friend, and that's only in season three. I know I said Asami has little character and so it doesn't matter, but they actually do explain why Asami had feelings for Mako. She was lonely and he made her feel safe and wanted, a real person that was with her not just for her looks and money (Which is bullshit anyway because Mako dropped that hoe the second Korra opened her pussy and also took 40k grand of her daddy's money), that was a good reason. Asami never explains why she likes Korra, in the letter it implies that she's lonely. That's it, she's lonely and has decided Korra is the perfect person to fall in love with. The only way I can understand it is that Asami feels pity for Korra getting crippled, and wants to take care of her PTSD having ass. But that's just not enough for me.

Yeah, I know she bitched at him for most of season three but at least she dropped it after he explained his reasons and wasn't a huge cunt about it. Also Opal is a hot piece of ass and much nicer that Korra so I think Bolin got it better in the end anyway.

As it stands, S3 is the only season I can enjoy. S1 has the stupid romantic triangle subplot, S2 has Korra acting even stupider than normal and the Raava/Vaatu retcon, S4 was okay, but they very shoddily dealt with Kuvira and we all know about the ending.
S3, despite bringing back the airbenders in a dumb way, had a decent villain and an interesting plot that didn't have Korra acting too retarded like the other seasons. And the end doesn't wave away her new disability by having someone else restore her to normal, she has to live with it until she can slowly regain her strength.

But the Wan episode was the only good episode in that season.

LoK should've just ended at S1, since it felt like a mini-series to begin with, and it shows that without the original writers (minus one writer who did the Wan episodes) or Aaron Ehasz, Bryke can't really do shit without squandering and sullying the lore of ATLA or make a decent romance subplot.
