I had a similar experience watching old episodes of Spitting Image recently.
For one, it was quite shocking to see TV satire being so non-partisan - everyone remembers them skewering Thatcher, but they roasted the Labour Party and others just as hard. Also it was an experience to once again see political comedy with real teeth, couldn't have that nowadays.
Secondly, the old 80's adverts really did hint at a more pleasant world. Many of them were shockingly artful and quite classy compared to what we see today. It really reminded me just how much we've lost with the demise of traditional illustration and animation.
