The more interesting issue in this area to me is what happens to loyal translators and guides in countries after our military pulls out. I've heard a lot of stories about translators and contract workers in Iraq and Afghanistan who expected to be taken to America after the war ended or whatever but who just ended up being trapped in a warzone when they stopped working with the US military. Are these stories overblown? Can any vets speak to this issue in a more informed manner than the college kids who talk about it?

Almost every single local I met wanted me to vouch for them as being a good candidate for U.S. citizenship. The Iraqi's weren't so insistent because they were making beau coup dollars sponging off of the U.S. presence and could live a lifestyle that was miles above anything they could achieve in the States.

The Afghani's however were a more desperate lot. Not really an industrialized nation and stuck in the middle of nowhere. There was nothing for them to spend their money on.

All in all I'd say the stories are overblown. Yes, the U.S. employed many thousands of local contractors. Some were indeed risking their lives working directly for the U.S. military. Most of them were just nigger tier rubbish collectors who had to be cajoled into putting in a 4 hour workday for premium wages.

There are a few thousand barely worthy translators and associated people who I might consider eligible for citizenship given their effort but that's it.

I had a Canadian citizen corpsmen in my battalion when I was in Assramastan. He actually had his citizenship denied while in country. It was a paperwork fuckup and was fixed but you don't have to be a citizen to join. Remember the Navy's Filipino mafia is a thing.

The us military allows people from certain countries to enlist in return for eventual citizenship. Either he did not uphold his end of the bargain and serve the prescribed duration, got an other than honorable or dishonorable discharge or he committed fraud and claimed to be a citizen or legal alien when he was not.

Citizenship has never been a given for serving in the U.S. Army, although it has never turned away foreign nationals either. About the closest to it that has existed was that a indentured servant or slave could, if allowed by their master, be granted their freedom at the end of an honorable term of service.

That said, you do have a lot of red tape for applying for citizenship waived by serving in the U.S. Army like waiting periods and such, basically leaving just having a satisfactory working level of English (which you'd need, or develop, during your military service usually) and passing the citizenship test.
