I am not seeing the problem with the 24-hour captcha we've been using. Two scenarios: 1) Spammer is using a small handful of IPs or 2) is using hundreds of IPs

If a few IPs, spammer completes daily captcha, spams board. Simple algorithm detects excessive POSTs from IP and auto-bans spammer and deletes all threads/posts made from IP. Spammer switches to another IP and rinse and repeat until spammer is tired of entering captcha codes.

If the spam is fully automated and spammer is using a virtually unlimited number of IPs, the daily captcha would be too much for them to keep entering captchas.

How is this not an easy problem to solve?

When I spammed boards, I'd fill out CAPTCHA for 5-10 IPs and usually that's enough to wipe a catalog before the mods do anything about it. If it's a team of people filling out CAPTCHA you could get some pretty good spam going

Having to do a captcha for each post is not only annoying, but unnecessary. This spamfag may have hundreds of IPs, but if you just require one captcha every 24 hrs for each IP this spamfag will eventually tire of having to deal with a captcha every time one of his IPs gets b&. His bot will not be able to cope. It will slow it the fuck down and severely limit the scope of its capabilities. Why not just ban all of the IPs the bot's using then? I doubt any genuine poster would use that IP to post with anyway. Besides, banning all of the IP addresses the bot uses will cause it to run out of IPs to post with, thus ending the spam.
