I use an iphone (since all telecoms are compromised) and I don't upgrade every year. Smartphones can be used as tools instead of just hedonistic outlets either through games or social media. Using Venmo makes living with roommates easier for example. It's all how you use it.

Yes. You can get flipphones that have the same functions as a smart phone. They are mainly as prepaids or for people that want a simple phone that still has many of the smartphone functions.

Yeah, I've had my phone for 3 years and I don't consider it old even though it's full of scratches and other marks because I keep dropping it. Surprised it's still working and that the screen didn't break considering it's a smartphone and all (and considering that I got it for free), but it does feel like it's a robust phone. Don't really know what model it is, I know it's an LG and that I can call people and send texts with it so it's good enough for me I suppose.

If you read the article, the analysis says that the majority of the phones were the Samsung S4. Granted, not the newest model, but these were released in 2014. So the majority of the phones are still fully featured smart phones. Economy isn't great for everybody so more people are going to just keep their phones for an extra year or 2 instead of upgrading everytime their contracts expire. It is not like the phones now are that much different from the phones of 2 years ago anyway.

I know people who can't understand why I've had the same phone since I was 16, when I've just bought a new (used) car. They think that having a phone older than a year or two old is for people with no money.
