Regardless, the Soviets cloned a lot of American hardware and software, since they couldn't be bothered to make original shit themselves, real good that regime did on innovative and all. Most Soviet computers ran on 8086, Z80, and 6502 clones. Still, the hardware and software has always fascinated me

Not at all. What increases the drive of the developers is the amount people that use and appreciate their work. And in free software community users don't act like they are just customers or consumers (as kings or as slaves), but as part of the community. The fact that free software is usually also free as in "free beer" is beneficial to that.
I can you tell you this as a dev. Nothing drives me more than to see people use and recommend my work, and to see them care about it enough to report bugs to me.
Works better than proprietary software i.e. capitalism.

You could easily argue this point but the people who will argue this will then reject the claim that what we live in now is not a true capitalist society, to which you could also make a compelling case. Intellectuals place too much pride in their ideologies while failing to comprehend how they actually behave when applied to the real world. You will always have a large portion of people looking to fuck the masses. No ideology successfully accounts for this as evident by their multiple failures.
There's no real solution to this. You can have a group of well read experienced and informed people to decide who rules and what happens but there is no way to ensure they don't become corrupt or that some shadow group doesn't take control of the strings. You can try all you want to educate the populace so they make well informed decisions but this too is obviously futile because of the lowest common denominator.
This isn't Holla Forums though so there's no value to having a pointless conversation that will eventually end in two ideologues convinced they have the absolute answer while accomplishing absolutely nothing of value. This is a fucking technology board god damn it.
