I haven't been to the temple yet, I've kinda been between two wards so I haven't been able to get my temple recommend yet. As far as believing it, that's a tough question.

I've read the entire Book of Mormon. There's no way to prove what is in there is true unless you can find historical records of the people that are talked about in the book(Nephites, Lamanites, Jaradites). The stories mostly focus on Jesus, and following God's commandments, so it's a good read either way. Being a member for only 5 months I haven't read all of the doctrine yet(stuff like doctrine and covenants), but there isn't anything too crazy.

Things have definitely been a lot better in my life since joining. I pray every day, I use my priesthood in church, I'm serving in a calling, I participate in home teaching, and good things just seem to happen along the way. I would say that I do have faith in God now when I didn't before. People can say whatever they want about whether or not He exists, but there is definitely a noticeable benefit to having faith. It takes a while to get into the mindset, and even I'm still working on it but the benefit is there. I would say give it a try regardless of what you believe.

Most of the shit people talk about Mormons is bullshit, so don't worry too much.

I'm a Baptist and I think Mormonism is kind of silly, but I respect Mormons. Many of the Mormons I've met have had great work ethic, been super nice and reliable people. I think it comes from the church actually having expectations of its members, and having much more organization than protestant churches.

This is very true. Everything is volunteer work within the church, you get called to serve and the expectation is that you will to the best of your ability. Even the bishop is just a volunteer that was called to serve. You end up doing a lot of different things in the church if you are active. I'm on my first calling right now, and when you see how everyone else in the church does their best to serve it's contagious. You just want to do the best you can at anything you are asked to do.

As far as my beliefs go, they are a lot more solid than it sounds like the OP's beliefs will ever be. As it seems he's only joining for personal gain in this life only. I still have questions about certain things, but nothing that destroys my faith or would make me even consider leaving the church.
