We don't elect the chancellor, we elect parties, half of which then composite the electorate for the chancellor, the other half is made up of direct mandates which we do vote for, well, directly.

But to give you some perspective, back in 2013 apart from the NPD which is a federal honeypot for meth smoking skinheads, Merkel's party was the most conservative one there was.
And, up until last summer Merkel's official stance was that multiculturalism has failed, that Germany is not a country of immigrants, and so on. She basically out of the blue turned into the complete opposite of what we had elected.
