GitS is coming out just after the new Resident Evil and Underworld movies did. The RE and Underworld franchises were both Matrix rip offs and the Matrix itself is a GitS rip off. Paramount timed this release poorly so it was competing with preestablished movie franchises that are very similar too late in the game.

The white washing controversy probably helped it if anything. An asian qt would have helped it differentiate itself from Milla and Kate Beckinsale though.

It sounds like noone on Holla Forums has watched it because I've not heard an actual meaningful critique of why the movie is not good beyond criticism of Scarlett and the Robocop themes, and I understand why they added the latter.
Scarjo has two goofy as fuck moments (not scenes) but otherwise she didn't stand out a lot (like, say Daisy "Wide Eyes" Ridley who grabs attention inappropriately in every scene).
It leans heavily on the 1995 movie for a lot of area designs, scenes and concepts, and basically overlays that onto nu-robocop to give basic structure as the '95 movie was too freeform for Hollywood, in a pretty passable take on the concept.

What's going to happen now is that execs are going to go "look, they said to try and keep it similar to the source material and we did and it cost us eight figures, we're not fucking doing any more anime movies and if we do, we're going to localize the shit out of them and make sure people like it", and we'll see movies focus grouped to death and butchered a whole lot harder than this one was.

I'm going to pirate the blu-ray. From what I've heard the story is absolutely generic and probably stolen from a script that was made for something else. Also I hate that ugly jew bitch so its going to be a pain to watch her for an hour and change.

It'd be nice if it wasn't called ghost in the shell but I guess they really thought the nerd money was there so I can understand why they called it that.

In regards to the greater plot, it's as if the 1995 movie was mixed about 50/50 with the latest Robocop remake, and I'm pretty sure that's to give Western audiences something to relate to. It's not bad, but not hugely compelling. Adequate would be the word I'd choose. Instead of ending on the weird sequel-bait tone of the original GitS movie (Major melding with a sentient virus, becoming a loli, bent on seeking a greater purpose), it has a happy ending too, so there's that, if you're into that.

That said, it also gently examines the themes of transhumanism without shoving them down your throat, like District 9 did with its themes, which was pleasant.

I don't think it will blow you away, but it's consistent and has good visuals, which is more than can be said for a lot of films these days and I think puts it, merit wise, alongside films like the later Fast and the Furious sequels.

I'm actually keen for someone here to watch it and critique it because I'm interested to see what they would've changed. I don't think there is an version of this film that could have not bombed to be honest.

They make some pretty big changes to the source material here and there, and at times it feels more like Deus Ex or RoboCop as you said. If you're one of those people who needs their adaptations to be near perfect recreations of the original (in which case you should hate the 95 movie for being so different to the manga)you probably won't like it. If you can take it as it's own entity, it's a decent enough sci-fi movie. All I can really complain about is some of the dialogue that seems to be written especially so the slower members of the audience don't get lost, and that the villain was pretty generic.

Mixing the plot up with anti-establishment Robocop is absolutely vile. That is the complete opposite of the GitS story: the Major is seeking individuality and meaning in her own existence, not going out to say, "IT'S TEH GOVERNMENT'S FAULT!"
