I work in oregon, and scout blueberries among other things. These days, it hard even to find mexicans to help during the season you need them. Farm work is intensely seasonal. You've got a few full time guys that do the farm maintenance (spraying, mowing, pruning, fertilizing, fixing equipment, etc) for year, but when harvest comes around you need an extra team of dozen or hundreds of people for all of a month.

Everyone doing blueberries here are moving to mechanical harvesters. There is a lot of waste and leftover berries, but you can get the majority of that shit harvested and out of the field really quickly. Which is great, because when something is ripe, you don't want to let pests and disease multiply exponentially as it sits there waiting.

Using mechanical harvesters also prevents a lot of sanitation issues that come along with using mexicans to hand pick stuff.

It should also be noted that THE big reason for future labor problems are going to be regulations involving food safety. I can't really expound too much on such a topic as I an not that familiar with it, but farmers are getting to the point where they need a fucking full time lawyer to stay in business and comply with all the regulations that are coming online.

The simple fact is that many Americans rely on the current rigged system to make a living. That's just too bad, the well-being of America takes precedence over the economic success of the few.

If these go under, we have to rely on importing those crops from South America. Do you want that? I don't, but I don't think it's going to come to that. Automation is a way to keep the country fed with money left over in the wallets.
