It was very, very concentrated subversion to destroy the culture of 4chan from within. I could go on about this for hours, but TL;DR a bunch of faggots (possibly alphabet soup, but that may be crackpot conspiracy bullshit, more likely a bunch of bored trolls) flooded the board with shitty content day after day in order to drive down the overall content, drive away decent discussion, and enlist newfags to unknowingly contribute to even more of the shittiness. This was, like, a several year long campaign. Eventually it worked.
I will never not be mad about the whole chain of events that lead to 4chan's downfall.
In a non conspiratorial sense, I always likened it to the public park around where I live:
It used to be a nice place to throw back a couple beers and shoot the shit with the bros. you could talk all night about anything under the sun and have a good time doing it. It was a common meeting place for all sorts of people as long as they were willing to talk and could handle some bantz. Then some idiots brought some kids along.
We tolerated them for a while, they sometimes said some funny shit. But then they brought more, and more, and even more. Not long after it became infested with stupid little shits wanting to hang out with the big boys. Everything they do or say is stupid and the few laughs you can get among them isn't worth being surrounded by dipshits
That park is a shadow of what it once was. Now it's a meeting place for kids who come there to do stupid shit with their stupid friends. Some of the old bros still stop by there and are treated with a kind of admiration, but every time they do they leave not long after wondering why they even bothered.
There's so many people who I used to share many good times with that I never see anymore. And it's all because of these stupid fucking kids.
This honestly, and it's getting really fucking old. I'm not an oldfag, but I'm not very new, but I can sure as fuck see why this shithole has devolved the way it has all we have are newfags constantly pointing fingers to who is the newfag. The only thing that ever interested me about 4chan was the occasional thrill of an edgy shitpost or raid, and the humor that seemed to change and spit out new memes that spread like wildfire across the internet. And by the time the "normies" got ahold of the maymay there were new jokes already brewing. That shit feels mostly dead now. Now 4chan has hit a rut, it's in a pool of shit and it doesn't even want to leave, and this place is only marginally better since the community is smaller so there's less snowball effect turning the board into complete cancer.

I was about 12 years old when I first stumbled upon 4chan after oddly being redirected to the homepage. Probably from some affiliate site like dramatica. I used Holla Forums briefly but didn't browse frequently until I was about 13. I obviously like many other young teens was attracted towards Holla Forums and was able to play many games like Dark Souls in their prime.
I have used many boards and I will say that I last enjoyed 4chan for what is is back in 2014. That is when my favorite board /fit/ truly became cancer with generals populated with tripfags.
Newfags today will never know what it was like, that feeling of giddiness when m00t responds to you for the first or maybe even second time, even though he had better things to do but you were whining about why u got banned or what not.

We came here to get away from you. The fact that you want things banned on Holla Forums is one example of this. Holla Forums was best because the rules were "ZOMG NONE!!1!" Of course every now and then you'd get a lulzy ban because that rule applied to mods as well, and they could ban whenever, but they didn't exercise this power just to power trip, it was largely done to be funny.
If you don't like something on Holla Forums, ignore it. One of the biggest things that hurt Holla Forums was actually the captcha. Now this might seem counter intuitive, but before the captcha, Holla Forums was filled to the brim with spam, a lot of it trying to give you viruses, and it was better that way. Kept the riff raff out. Anyone who wasn't a moron was able to sort through the ocean of piss and find the few pearls of wisdom or comedy. The captcha helped immensely with the spam, but this only removed a barrier of entry that let retards in to ruin the site.
Removing noko was also terrible. Maybe the biggest thing. Noko should definitely be brought back.

Quality content is always few and far in-between, but it's there. Check the dates on all the ebin threads/events you've saved if you want to see proof. Unless you consider mudkips and text-macros some kind of fine art then there is not really a big difference between now and then. You either selectively forget the boring times or your standards have just changed.
There are some things like raids and CP which Moot cracked down on, but would it really have mattered? You had "legal CP" leaking through here for a long while, but people just complained. It didn't add anything to the site, just some drama over if it should be allowed or not. Otherwise it is just the same boring porn like you would complain about seeing now. And people have the ability to do raids on Holla Forums too, but they don't because the spirit of the times have changed. It's not interesting anymore. Trolling stupid little kids on club penguin and making nigger swastikas in habbo hotel is just not as fun as remembered. That's why no one bothers even when given the opportunity. You squandered all this freedom because it was never that great to begin with.
4chan is still shit and I wouldn't go back (no webms with sound), but a lot of this is just nostalgia goggles I think.
