Why did the early Soviet Union had such amazing art and such thriving avant-garde movement? They were ahead of their time in practically every creative field there is: cinema, photography, graphic design, music, poetry, you name it. There's got to be an explanation for this, right?

A better question would be why did Stalin have to implement Socialist Realism as part of his consolidation of power. Or more precisely, why did Stalin choose Socialist Realism over the avant garde?
Real art, pic related.
Mussolini did the same in Italy with the Futurists. They just couldn't allow artists to "set an example" as people existing outside of a strictly-defined Party line.
Typical reactionary philistinism.
Go back to Holla Forums.
you are a special kind of retard, aren't you
...
Nice!
thanx mate i hope one day i can use my art for some communist bs
Is this art?
This is theoretically art, just not good art at all. It is uninspired, unremarkable and unimaginative - which is not surprising, since it is hardly more than commissioned propaganda. I'd say the second one is the worst, as it doesn't even have any technical command to it.
Stalin felt obliged to destroy all artistic and intellectual life of the Soviet Union.
i should start doing that
the avant garde art style was still permitted and there were many galleries, but socialist realism was mostly used for propaganda pieces and for widespread use. The avant garde art style was still funded by the soviet leadership like all other art styles however.
The reason why socialist realism was put on the stage light was because party officials thought it was a simple artform that would be appreciated by the majority of the proletariat at the time.
this comic book villain shit is plain funny though.
...
I clearly expressed why I find it to be poor, through. Did that trigger you?
wow proles are fucking retarded they need hand-holding from our benevolent philosopher kings don't let them develop their own taste for art
do these pictures trigger you?
but art galleries of all kinds were funded. Socialist realism was chones for propaganda pieces however. Are you implying the proletarian artistic experience is limited to propaganda?
Am i the only one here who kinda likes Socialist Realism?
Yes. Enjoy your concentrated spectacle.
The main avant-garde institution in the USSR was called "Proletkult" and the whole point was to appeal to the masses without insulting their intelligence.
*chosen
also whoops, forgot to take off my sage.
have an abstract painting from 1930.
enjoying any form of art is good. There is no good or bad art, as it is subjective.
At least the fourth one has some decent emphasis on color, shape and composition. The third one is pure, unadulterated shit.
This is not abstract. This is a figurative painting.
nah fam, different folks for different strokes.
Prohibiting research on everything from genetics to Freudian psychoanalysis is not something a comic book villain would do, because comic book villains are usually intelligent.
But that's probably all bourgeois western propaganda though, you're right
yes im mad as fuck now
"Different folks for different strokes" is quite a PoMo thing to say for a tankie.
At least the art you posted this time is a bit better.
Last I checked Stalin was not the director of the ministry of science and research.
Or do you think he ruled the soviet union despotically?
The first pic is "Beat the Whites with the Red Wedge", a 1919 lithograph by the same artist who also did the graphic design of the poetry book in the OP.
...
yeah, I know. He was taken off the stagelight later however, dude was selling black squares on white canvases for astronomical sums and was promptly forbidden to sell his shit. He still held his gallery however.
have a pic of a kid who's dad works in the mines.
Pretty cool picture. Fuck work!
Bullshit. Other than this:
That's the only real art I've seen in this thread so far.
...
Because they were russians, tbh. Russians have been unbelievable in all the arts since the 19th century.

I'm genuinely interested! Do you have any sources for freedom of art in Stalin's soviet union?
fells bad fam
Based
Tell me more, about how Constuctrivism and Suprematism (Malevich, first pic), flourished under Stalin's "The people will only see socialist realism" BS?
Stalin was shit, ALSO, cause he banned the common people from having any other artistic perspective than "SOCIALIST REALISM FOR LIFE! PRAISE STALIN! THE PARTY IS ALWAYS RIGHT!"
Also, tell me more about Tatlin's Tower…
I actually really like the first picture unironically.
t. ML
Prole here. Moar Socialist Realism plz.
Perhaps when the next socialist revolution happens in russia Tatlin's tower can finally be built. It's also a shame that they are demolishing architecture from the 20's and early 30's in modern russia.
The postmodern period didn't begin until the late 70's.
You can't just deem anything you don't like "postmodern" you ignorant reactionary fuck.
the russian avant-garde was typical modernism user
Futurism was a mistake.
Soviet realism was ok.
Brutalism should've got gulag'd tbh
