Libre TTS

What is the state of libre TTS software? Do people even actively develop it anymore? I guess espeak is ok but what if I want some more realistic voices? Apparently there is this MBROLA shit but it seems hella dead and it's badly documented. Has anyone ever got it to work?

I just want to build a libre Amazon Echo so that I don't get spied on.

There is a ton of research into the subject, it's how google does it and most of code is open source. AFAIK, most of the other approaches/tools for TTS are either closed source or dead.
