While I'm positive any writer for a Star Trek would be more than happy to put a Catian on the crew, and even go to bat to defend the decision, I'm certain the bean counters would absolutely freak at the cost of that makeup job or cg on a single character.

Which is why I got ten kinds of triggered when Into Darkness had those two girls with poor cg cat tails. It's a fucking insult when even the original Trek, which had no budget or technology, was willing to try putting a lizard man in the show and not just paint a dude green.

At the very best, I could see a Catian possibly be a recurring guest character for budgetary reasons, but its not bloody likely.

Can we all just agree that the Caitan's are Larry Niven's Kazinti and be done with it? Back in the day Niven and Rodenberry were bros and had this cross pollinating agreement for their setting where the Kazinti could and did appear in Star Trek (The Voyage Home, Star Trek V, etc. usually as a background character) but with the exception of Starfleet Battles they never appear under that name in any licensed material.

Kzinti and Caitians are two different species.

Kzinti only ever showed up once in episode of TAS, though there had been plans for them to be in ENT.

Last movie had some CGI frog-ish aliens, though sounds right that they wouldn't bother with a full CGI/heavy makeup bridge character.

You know in most sci-fi media they get around the language thing by saying there are automatic translators. So why is it that cat aliens almost always purr and roll their r's? Why would a translator perfectly translate inflection, tone and speech but just decide 'fuck it' when it comes to cats rolling their r's?

In Star Trek it would imply a kind of machine-assisted telepathy / ability for devices carried around by people to read the minds of other people nearby, which opens up a whole realm of other possibilities.

Aw crap. I was gonna go with this sort of thing in something I'm working on. It was a sort of biological microchip attached directly to the main focal point in the brain connecting to the spine and nerves neo cortex right? though I wasn't totally going the angle of magic translation here it's under the idea that the creators of such a device met creatures and absorbed logical material at one point so the language can be translated with the chip. Otherwise it's just another language entirely so my guy would really struggle in some cases. Can I still make it work if it's like that?
