Well it's not a great episode but it's better than the second and third because Maka's in it.

The main problem I think is that
1. they're stretching out the episodes too long.
2. more characters should have haki. Like there's no reason why robin shouldn't know how to use observational haki.
3. Flanderization effect.

Dressrosa was the worst because there just wasn't that much going on. Like Marineford and Seabody were fine, there was a lot going on and a lot of stuff was introduced, even though they were like 40ish episode arcs. But there was no reason for Dressrosa to be 100 episodes and I don't want to ever see 100 episodes on a single island again.
Unless it's the culmination of everything I don't want to see another 50 episode arc of anything ever again.

Gon is probably one of the more likeable MC if you ask me. Have you ever watched the 1999 (or 1997) anime? One episode always stuck with me. Gon is hurt and terrified about moving foward. He is vomiting in fear, traumatized by Hisoka, and very real possibility of dying. He ends up crying that he wants to go home. I think that was the first time I have ever seen a shonen protagonist break down like that. And it makes sense. He is kid. Any child would be terrified. That episode made me love his character.

I have only watched the 2011 one and I don't remember him vomiting from fear in fact, I'm certain that the part you're talking about takes place during the hunters license exam. I hate him because he's a fucking moron and he exhibits typical shounen mc behavior with a little bit of fuckery thrown in. He is also beyond annoying with his unwavering will to win to the point it literally makes me sick.

I think that's the part where people like gon. In most shounen the mc's selfishness and strong will is a good thing because somehow he always saves his friends and the power of friendship ends up winning, but in the two situations described above it's a pretty big flaw.

Actually the more I think about it, it might be due to the fact that his only support for the chimera ant arc was killua who couldn't figure out how to handle him. Kurapika is off being edgy (and would have gone through the same thing in the york new city arc if gon, killua and leorio weren't there) and Leorio wasn't there to help for some reason.

The show probably has one of the best macro-level concepts and visions of any series in any medium IMO. I put it alongside Wheel of Time and Malazan Book of the Fallen in that sense.
The One Piece and how it relates to the lost era is something that has to be tied together but Oda really seems to know what he's doing. It might fall apart into nothing but I honestly don't think so because there have been examples of Chekhov's gun where something or someone was referenced or seen once then lays dormant for years before it comes into play again in an eloquent way that's purposeful and clearly thought out prior, Blackbeard is an obvious example- Oda knew what the character's role was going to be in the series when he was first introduced at episode 100-something. Same with Shanks.
Some of the individual arcs recently have struggled but the overarching story is the strength of the series which is why I think most people have continued watching after Fishman's Island and Dressrosa.
I guess, it's a shonen. At least the powerups make sense.

I found one joke funny and that was because I guessed it before the punchline - which they fucked up anyway. I dropped it after one episode.
