It's because they want some sort of recognition for the webcomic without any negative repercussion for the webcomic being shit, even though the context is "Here's my terrible webcomic, it's terrible."

Much like the artist's failed webcomic itself, it's done for some sort of fame, so we can all go "Woah, look at this fancy man with this webcomic", but he can't actually show it because deep down he knows he's not as good as he would like to be and does not want that confirmed through the 4 anonymous people who would actually look at it.

If you've ever seen the 'How Your Webcomic' threads on cuckchan you already know how most webcomic creators can be. Stuck far up their own asses and wanting more validation than actual criticism.

If you've even given anything up for criticism in imageboards, you'll know how far stuck up their own asses the armchair critics in these boards are.

You're much more likely to get the obvious art quality problems like bad anatomy pointed out and opinions given as objective truths and told how you should be doing what they want instead of what you want, than actually get anything constructive or useful. And if you try to argue against their opinions and why they're just opinions or explain your decisions or basically say anything contrary to what they just said, you'll get an angry mob who start throwing insults and calling you a stuck up butthurt artist who can't take criticism.

Frankly the only front I've seen more helpful advice is in programming on /agdg/ because I would guess that's something you actually need to know exactly what you're talking about. When it comes to art/writing it's a massive two way street if you're not pointing out obvious flaws in someone's work because the crap about style, what suits them, yada yada always comes into play that makes people want to fight. Imageboards are mostly good for quick feedback since posting art/stories up in other places means you'll need a better hook to get people interested at times. But since you're getting such quick feedback not all the shit is gonna be good or helpful most of the time.

Don't wanna do some slice of life or gag of the week shite. What kind of plot would people like to see that doesn't involve a greater threat like zombies, depression or dramatic romance? Setting doesn't matter enough to tell.

Here's what you gotta do you drugged up communist. In order to make good ideas you have to force your mind into an adrenaline state to make them flow in. What you gotta do is play Russian Roulette with a loaded handgun at least twice a day and if you have no firearms then you will make a noose that will choke you to the point of blackout but not kill you. Once your body realizes its in the last moments it will flood your mind with grand ideas like Moon Men invade Mars for their women, the life and times of suicide toaster or even a story about robots.

Then you'll be up there with webcomic greats like-okay there are none but you get it don't you, hippie?

I like Philip K. Dick/Robert Anton Wilson/Grant Morrison stuff about cosmic truth, conspiracy and paranoia, all of which might just be the delusions of an unstable protagonist.

Wrap up the old comic in a storyline of the new one. It's always a nice nod to your dedicated followers, and a great way to inspire new readers to your old work. Also it's a ready-made source of supporting characters.

Personally, I like martial arts plots. SJW characters don't fucking train, or do anything, because they're always right and the character armour lets them fart through life, heroing with a condom on. I like to see training, guts, brains, and danger, in a world that wants to KILL THE FUCK out of them.

Also, you could try William S. Burroughs's "Cut-Up" technique to prod your creativity. You could even use Tarot or the I Ching to help write the plot. Lucid dreaming is my trick.

Writing for others is a fast track to misery, because people can be pretty fickle about what they say they want and what they actually pay attention to. The first (if not only) person you need to satisfy is yourself. The audience will come if they happen to like it too.

Coming up with a setting before you even have a plot (and characters) to utilize it is a bigger problem though, as that can easily blossom into issues of focus and direction (something that plagues a lot of webcomics). Perhaps you should reevaluate your approach to brainstorming.

The key to success for many webcomics is the author cramming as much fan service and as many of their fetishes into it while never making it actually porn.

Currently the whole point of the setting is that it's freeform as fuck so I'm allowed to experiment with my drawing, and the current plot I've come up with it is fairly dependent on the setting being what it is, so I probably couldn't have come up with it unless I made the setting first.

If some people disliking your stuff kills your motivation, than you are gonna have a tough time. Especially since you are working with "IP" that isn't yours and people have their own take on it, and if yours goes against that too much they will dislike it from the get go.

Something good, fresh, and entertaining. Catering to fetishes, like pointed out, will get you audience too. Besides that, people like being pandered to, but that is usually viable as only a short term strategy or one used very sparingly.

You should work on something you want to see, but can't find anywhere. If you exercise your imagination and put new ideas in your head, you will come up with something sooner or later. You must actively read, watch, play, listen, and observe.
Most of my ideas begin when I am bored and daydream.
