Is Cuba an alright place to live?

Is Cuba an alright place to live?
Are they actually communist?

Be honest.

I have a tankie friend who goes there every year. He says it's becoming worse the more they liberalize their economy. He said every year he sees more and more unemployed and homeless people lying around.

People who go there tell me that instead of leaving tips for hotel maids they leave items that are hard to come by, like razor blades. That indicates to me that the Cuban economy isn't exactly incompetent, they just have difficulty producing certain products. And I'm sure this could be related to the embargo.

No, of course not. Are they socialist? I'm not sure. I think about 75% of industry is owned by the state. Do the workers decide how their workplace should be run? I'm not sure.

Cuba is a communist country. Not to say Chavez hasn't made some serious fuck ups, but we should criticize him as one of our own.

Cuba is worse to live in than a lot of western nations, but the strides made towards equality are notable, their healthcare system is their most emblematic of this. Chavez took over a country that was mostly rural with these rural areas having almost no access to healthcare. Not only has their medical care become available to everybody in the country but they also export doctors.

The biggest problem for them in economic growth has always been American embargoes and their forced separation from most of the world.

what the fuck am I reading right now?

There's many South American countries where you'd be far worse off. Cuba's done pretty well in comparison to the rest of the region especially when you consider that they have an embargo with the world's economic superpower.

lmao this board is truly hopeless

Their stated goal is to bring about a communist society and they are making significant strides towards it. Communist does not mean 'a stateless classless society' in this case, instead it means a communist party is actively trying to bring the nation to this point.

The Cuban Revolution did show some emancipatory potential, but being caught between the heart of global capitalism and revisionist social-imperialism it never had a chance at building a communistic mode of production. Nowadays their claim to socialism is produced with all the sincerity and enthusiasm you might expect from the pseudo-communist parties in Asia.

Yeah I meant Castro, my bad

Reminder: "an alright place to live" means that you won't have as much money as a foreigner visiting Cuba.

It's better off than the majority of Latin America.

Nah. I'm not even sure they're socialist.

It's only the United States that has an embargo on Cuba no? You'd think that Cuba would be in a better place right now.

Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, etc. doesn't have a lot of natural resources and they are crowded countries. And yet they have managed to build a strong economy. Cuba has made a lot of progress but they aren't on that level by a long shot. Don't doctors in Cuba only get $30USD/month? lol

pros: World-class healthcare, internet, no extensive poverty (things are changing in that regard due to plantations workers) and maybe the most environmental-friendly country in the world, cool 60s cars everywhere, black girls.

cons: one-party state, prob turning into Chinese capitalism, hates actual commies.

No, and they've never claimed to be.

Try harder.

No.
No.

yeah not like america is the number one consumer country on the planet or anything lol

Cuban internet sucks big time.

LOL.

now they they're letting in all the yanquis, not any more

ok fam

...

As Caribbean nations go, it is a good place to live, compared to European nations, I would not say so.

Embargo means "none of my allies get to do business with them", it's not a boycott. No one gives a shit about you burgers.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embargo

this, anarkiddies would just wave peace signs and let Batistites have their way.

Europe is not at all self-suficient but are one of the main benefactors of Global Capitalism, if muh iphones factor at all on what you consider good living conditions then you should fuck off back to >>>/liberty/

Except that's an idiotic way to define things.
Like what?

HOLY SHIT THAT FIRST ONE. I WANNA PUT MY FACE IN THAT ASS.

...

The United States may consume more than any other individual country on the planet. But it's still just one country.

Canada is the second largest buyer of Cuban exports (Venezuela is the first) and last I checked Canada is an ally of the United States. So if America's allies are allowed to trade with Cuba, what's Cuba's excuse for not doing better? Why are Cuba's exports lagging way, way behind their imports?

I don't buy this bullshit that Cuba is doing very well. Cuba's GDP per capita (PPP) was $19,950.28USD in 2013. Which is not bad. That's far better than their Nominal GDP because the cost-of-living is so low in Cuba. But the last time my uncle was there, there were prostitutes all over the place. And my uncle is no ladies man. He's in his late 50s, has a gut and balding. And Cuban women swarmed all over him. And other guys in Canada who engaged in sex tourism in Cuba tell me the same thing. In Cuba, the hotel staff, the prostitutes, etc. love it when you bring them care packages of goods that are hard to find in Cuba. They prefer to be given household goods as tips/gifts more than they prefer US/Canadian dollars in fact.

No, but neither is any other capitalist country
No, communism in one country is an oxymoron.
If you are asking about their ideology, then still no.
Are they tending towards communism? No.
Were they ever? No.

They started to.
But then the world went to hell.

And yes, it is an oxymoron, and that is why Cuba is only to be seen as a good way for a small country to survive, without going fullneolib, in the modern world.

IMO!

tbf, being fat is a status symbol in most of Latin America. It's like the reverse of the Western "healthy living" trend among the upper tiers of society.

This is bullshit.

Wouldnt be able to tell you

No

Racism is a prob there too.

I'd compare Cuba to Haiti or any Caribbean nation, they are a relatively great country to live in, and it isn't a cesspool of tourism or US foreign policy disaster. I'm sure it will get more money once it becomes the center of US tourism, but you will see slums and tons of homeless people there as well.
