GitHub does it again

GitHub manipulated "Trending repositories" page for a political agenda.

The repository in the picture is just a website files for neveragain.tech, here is archive link: archive.is/NJttC

I know this is pretty much nothing, but it is good enough to remind people that GitHub is harmful. You're putting you eggs in a closed source software run by politically driven corporation that doesn't believe in meritocracy anymore.

Ok, and? Where's your proof that something was manipulated?

Better OP:

Look at these GitHub fags that signed this basic bitch leftist screed. That company's long past dead inside. Don't worry though, Atlassian SJWs have signed it as well.

You don't have to go as far as using Fossil instead of git, but you should put your code on your own website.

It is shown in the picture. Based on the number of stars it should never been this high up. I have been visiting GitHub trending page for quite some time to find interesting projects.

This is clearly manipulated. Read the archive.is link, it is a political website with leftist fear mongering and pro-immigration in technology field.

He tried to save you.

Th surprising from people who promotes the use of non-libre software.

>I think github does a stellar job at the actual hosting part. I really do. There is no question in my mind that github is one of the absolute best places to host a project. It's fast, it's efficient, it works, and it's available to anybody.
-- Linus Torvalds

Anyway, there's nothing wrong with hosting a git repository in a centralized place. You want people to be able to access it, and that's really hard if there's no central official repository.

It's decentralized because that means you can continue working on it without access to the central repository. As a bonus, it makes it easier to host mirrors of your repository.

Lots of things are wrong with github, but the basic idea is fine.

thank me later

Just as long as you don't put any kind of humor in the project name of your webm converter script

Let me guess, by "humor" you mean some edgy Holla Forums shit.

The program was called Webm for Retards. They took offence and deleted the repo and all it's forks, even though the forks didn't have 'offensive' names.
Personally I'm surprised Directly Injected CSS is still up there. It's readme is full of dick jokes.

Just the word "Retard". Very mildly edgy and offensive, but nothing Holla Forums.

I think that also automatically blocked its forks, including one named WebMConverter, which was even worse.

such hypocritical fuckheads

We refuse to participate in the creation of databases of identifying information for the United States government to target individuals based on race, religion, or national origin.
We will advocate within our organizations:
to minimize the collection and retention of data that would facilitate ethnic or religious targeting.
to scale back existing datasets with unnecessary racial, ethnic, and national origin data.
to responsibly destroy high-risk datasets and backups.
to implement security and privacy best practices, in particular, for end-to-end encryption to be the default wherever possible.
to demand appropriate legal process should the government request that we turn over user data collected by our organization, even in small amounts.
If we discover misuse of data that we consider illegal or unethical in our organizations:
We will work with our colleagues and leaders to correct it.
If we cannot stop these practices, we will exercise our rights and responsibilities to speak out publicly and engage in responsible whistleblowing without endangering users.
If we have the authority to do so, we will use all available legal defenses to stop these practices.
If we do not have such authority, and our organizations force us to engage in such misuse, we will resign from our positions rather than comply.
We will raise awareness and ask critical questions about the responsible and fair use of data and algorithms beyond our organization and our industry.

this is how fucking retarded these people are

what is a social security number, what is facebook, what is a w2/w4/i9, what is every fucking social media app, what is a dating profile, what is saying/wearing/identifying with "x" religion, race, group etc

So what's the best alternative to github that isn't SJW-infested and supports free speech?

gitlab

Found what seems to be a semi-reputable list. Gitlab the website is apparently compromised. I think I'll just skip straight to self hosting for the moment.

VPS running NGINX and cgit

What's wrong with putting edgy Holla Forumsshit in your fucking repository as long as it's not illegal?

Never change SJWHub.

And Phabricator for issues.

Not every website is an imageboard with relatively few rules. Some websites like to appear semi professional.

It's a free repository. You expect every kind of person to be able to make a repo there. If you don't like something, you don't have to participate in it. Github shouldn't be responsible for whatever gets made there, and its reputation for holding "problematic" repos will only get tarnished in the eyes of professional victims who are not even real users of the service anyway.

That's why you are here, don't forget

I know they're just pearlclutching over Trump's muslim ban, but it's nice to see an open movement against spying from people so deeply embedded in the establishment. Talk about useful idiots holy shit.

I take it as you've never used any forums and your experience interacting with people online on sites other than imageboards comes from modern social media trash. It wasn't uncommon on forums for moderators to enforce some level of civility.

There is a difference between enforcing civility/removing spam and censoring things that aren't politically correct.

...

Those mods were fags, that's why everyone flocked to SA and shit. Why would any normal person want some lowlife busybody to come in and tell them what they can't say, for free? This board is plenty civil so long as you just behave yourself.

Look at the number of forks.
I don't get why any of you have a problem with this, it's people advocating for better privacy rights... Unless of course you're not even Holla Forumsies

...

Yeah, hosting a repo in a central public place is not the issue. However, people have turned GitHub practically into a centralized repo by using features like the wiki or the issue tracker. There is too much information tied to GitHub but not part of the repo, so if you were to just clone the repo all that information would be lost.

I get the issue tracker, but the wiki is pointless. Just put a 'documentation' directory into your repo and use Markdown or reStructuredText for the documents. Both formats allow for hyperlinks, and if you make the links relative to the current file they will work when it is rendered as HTML on GitHub. Furthermore, and they will work locally as well, so one could implement a "follow link" in Vim or Emacs (it they don't have that feature already).

All those people have Facebook and Twitter accounts. It's just vapid virtue signalling.

it can be cloned as a git repo, too.
I'm sure that issues can be somehow backed up too.

Oh, good to know. I still think the Wiki pages should be part of the repository though.
