That's a pretty common thing for muggers to do. That's why when I'm out in public, I stand off in a secluded area when I use my phone. That way, if someone runs up to grab my phone, they'll be less likely to surprise me and snatch it from my hand.
This is why I always track who's around me and determine how much of a threat they are while walking (based on speed, walking technique, numbers, age and associates)

Don't Android phones have multiple user support? You could have a regular user and a user for your private stuff and they wouldn't be able to log into the account that matters.
I always thought a cool idea would be to have a glove or hand implant with a RFID chip, which the phone uses to check whether it's in your hand. If it is it unlocks, and if it isn't for 5 seconds it locks. They'd probably just steal your glove though.
A low tech solution would be to stand with your back to a wall. That way anyone running at you can be seen, and you can at least lock your phone in preparation. It's a good idea in general.
