It's not more or less secure, they both have their pros and cons.
In opennet mode, anonymity comes from plausible deniability. If any of your peers have harvested the splitfiles of all public files, they can tell what you are relaying. The anonymity comes from difficulty in telling if you are the originator of the request or just relaying it for another peer.
It has been shown in court documents that police lie to judges about the probability of peers being true originators (based on HTL). They claim upwards to 80% when in reality it's less than 5%.
