This is Islam's "reformation" - a return to the fundamentals of the religion based on literalistic interpretations of scripture and zealous asceticism. The reformation did not make European Christianity more tolerant and loving - but more vicious and fanatical. Icon-smashing, heretic-killing, witch-hunting, papist framing and the like were all unleashed by the Reformation. Prior to that the Catholic Church was harsh towards heretics but very lax with believers, so long as you did your confession and obeyed the church your sins were forgiven and hushed away. Just look at what the folks in the Renaissance got up to as proof.
The positive aspects of the Reformation was that it encouraged widespread literacy through translating the bible into local languages - which fundamentalist Islam does not do with the Arabic Quran.
Christianity is historical and teleological - it posits humanity's development as a progression towards salvation and eventually a new utopia - this blatantly theological attitude is evident in supposedly secular ideologies like Marxism. Islam is the other way round, God chose to reveal the final truth to Muhammad in the time of Muhammad, everything since is deviant degeneracy.
