As a leftist, she does have some misunderstandings of Marxism, but I think she provided some meaningful critique @ 2007's Rethinking Marxism conference.

I do not know about her theory, but her historical works are trash. It is not even just the postmodern aspect of it. Her conclusions are clearly decided on before her research is compiled, she misrepresents her sources, she entirely omits contrary theories, her narratives are spun out of soeculation and wholecloth.. Butler is a poor historian all around.

Both of the buildings in that pic are very ugly examples of both "modern" and "traditional" buildings. Modern building designs that aren't so…well, stupid, are light years ahead of any ancient brick rectangles.

It's not that there is no objective reality. It's that we can't grasp reality as it is. We have to filter it through our perception. There's no objective perception. The only worthwhile thing to take away is that our perception is limited and can be faulty at any level, so we shouldn't take it as gospel truth.

Architecture can be prole as fuck: subtle choices in building design can have huge benefits to practical aspects like energy efficiency and living comfort. It gets bourgy when the designer only wants to be an attention whore for passersby.

If anything, it'd be one of those ways that socialism makes life immediately more pleasant because superfluous and impractical construction is a serious problem for the less wealthy. If people want pretty buildings, they can simply add to existing plain construction or opt for more aesthetically pleasing material whenever the practical difference is negligible.
