You may say what You want about Marxist-leninist project of XX century, but You have to admit that socialist architecture is pretty neat.

theres a big field on the right that could be used for vertical farming

Too bad they already have built a shopping mall there :/

Vertical farming is inefficient and wasteful, just grow things in the countryside and haul them to the city, vertical farming is a liberal pipedream

Vertical farming could become economical down the road, especially if people stop being backwards greenfags about nuclear energy, but right now it is a liberal pipedream.

Explain how is vertical farming inefficient?

COMMENT DISCARDED.

The amount of energy expended and resources needed to have an efficient farm is too hight, you're really better off with classic farms. Between pesticides, energy, water etc.

Are you the guy who ragequit on me? That was funny tbh

How about the argument we could turn more land over to nature, surely that would be a good thing.

I agree I'm a bit skeptical and it seems like the same 'technology will fix everything' idealism but it seems good in theory at least.

The problem with that is that with vertical farming, while it seems more efficient space-wise just creates more urban sprawl which leads to more spread out cities, more difficult public transit, more pollution from cars and generally defeats the purpose of bringing farmland back to nature ecologically.

How, specifically, would vertical farming spur urban sprawl? Seems to me that urban sprawl already occurs without vertical farming and that the measures to counteract it exist independently of vertical farming.

I just don't see any unique ability to drive urban sprawl in vertical farming, I guess.

You're taking up space in the city for farms. Even if it seems like less space take a city like New York, could you really feed 8 million people or even put a dent in feeding 8 million people without taking up a good amount of space, on top of that farming isn't just water and sunlight, you need equipment, pesticides, storage… it all adds up. There's a reason there's so much farmland. Even if you stacked it 3 levels high it's still going to take up a lot of space and energy.

Surely the solution is to just construct the vertical farms in a nearby county or immediate suburb, not in the heart of the city? A small jaunt by truck into the city still achieves most of vertical farming's aims.

I guess I should also point out that I am and I still think there are serious technological obstacles at the moment, but that it could become viable in the future, particularly when we get over our collective irrational radiophobia.

...

But in a way that already exists. Farms at least where I am are usually close enough to the city that having a vertical one defeats the purpose.

but really, commieblocks are okay, better than some stuff, worse than some stuff

I like this kind of look, and yes I know how liberal-corporate it is

Can these farms grow exotic fruits or vegetables in the open air? Can they operate year round? Do they minimize soil depletion and maximize the agricultural output of per-area land use the way vertical farming would?

There are still plenty of other reasons to proceed with vertical farming once the technology is in place. I don't see it completely replacing all agriculture as we know it, but there would probably be a productive niche it could fulfill.

At least in LA they do and they can… like 5 miles from me they grow Strawberries and Avocados pretty much year round

>liking comfy is for proles

Then you don't need me to tell you about the dire state of your underground aquifers and their imminent collapse. Even if you don't believe that vertical farming reduces water use, surely distributing the amount of agriculture being done to elsewhere would take dire strain off the California water crisis.

Shout out to the people wanting lush green lawns in the middle of a desert though

Yeah, shout out to those bourgeois fucks and their McMansion estates, but that graph should still make it clear where the bulk of the strain comes from.

Oh yeah, agreed agreed. I heard some of the stories about California agriculture, it's truly ridiculous.

...

The water still gets used though, until we can engineer crops that take less water then we won't be able to solve the problem by moving where we grow the food.

De gustibum non disputum, or some rot you can't dispute taste

What I'm trying to get at here is that some people find the aesthetic of pure functionality more pleasing

**It's also quicker and cheaper to make, and when housing people that's really important

I know, it's weird, but I like it for some reason. Maybe it is because I've grown up in this environment.
When I see those blocks I see the best that was in communist dream, even in the darkest times. So many homes were built for so many people. The one from the first post(Falowiec) can fit the population of an small town.

Soviet Urban planning is my city building wet dream.
Blocks of concret FOR EVER!

WHO NEED ARCHITECTURE WHEN YOU CAN HAVE THE SAME BLOCKS AGAIN AND AGAIN???

IT'S SO EFFICIENT IT MAKES ME WANNA CRY OF JOY!

Capitalist apartment buildings of the 50-60 were much worse

CONCRETE BLOCKS ARE THE ONLY WAY FORWARD!
KILL ALL ARCHITECTS!
URBAN PLANNERS ONLY!

Vertical farming is a great idea, but requires far greater invesment in automation.
Once you automate enough, sure.
Till then, we need the land.

Can't we just agree that some cities can get their commieblocks and others, shiny glass and steel, and others can have some atrocious neo-classical stuff. Go to the one you like best.

But comrade!
Don't you prefere the capitalist urban planning of "build everything, MAXIMUM PROFIT!|"???

Sure.
Speaking of my city here is XIX century part of the same city(like 25 minutes walk from where photo in original post was taken) that's is more close to my bourgeois sensitivities.
I like variety i guess.

do you even utilitarianism

Not every building looked the same and there was some thought put into public space.

Google says that it's Gdansk, a Polish city.
Polish commie, heh?
Quite unusual.

...

We are not robot. We need beauty. Beauty come with variations and order, with a local style and human sized buildings.
