chan culture has always been contrarian and shocking. It used to be that liberals were the sarcastic and freethinking rebels trampling on sacred cows like organized religion, patriotism, chastity and sobriety, so 4chan was liberal, and also did racism, gore, harrassment and mischief because those are also edgy and rebellious.

Now that the culture's shifted leftwards and identity politics, gay rights, and intersectionality are coming into vogue, chans are conservative(or actual-factual communist). they go after liberal sacred cows like feminism, lgbt rights, racial equality, and so on. It's not really a conscious or principled stand and never was.

Both topics should be sepreated. Ever since politics and internet combined both subjects have became worst and worst. Before politics the internet would pump out more OC and entertaining content. Before internet politics didn't have retarded groups such as ANTIFA, Alt-Right, SJWS,PC culture etc.

Politics is merely a lowest common denominator topic. It's up there with roll threads or any topical cancer at the time.

The issue is chans often have a lot of spectator users and very little content creators, you get new users coming by to witness "LE EPIC THREADS XD" or someshit, so they contribute barely anything to a board, however they will end up posting in zero effort threads named above. These threads end up becoming the only active threads because of it.

I'd say the issue isn't as bad here as 4chan as there aren't so many LCD threads that they knock off any potentially good (though less liked by the majority, but more loved by a minority) threads, instead the issue here is the site and board are fucking dead, but this still results in people posting in the LCD threads.

Then people wanted to have a name with their profiles, and then their faces and sometimes even addresses along with places of work posted online for the world to see. Businesses REALLY pushed this. Once the busybodies started using this to hurt others speaking freely, and laws were being passed to limit rights, then those who relaxed had two choices - keep relaxing until they take the ability to relax away, or fight back. We chose the latter, thus we're miserable but free and becoming gradually happier the better things get, instead of briefly happy before death or slavery.

The problem is that if you are not interested in politics, eventually politics become interested in you, and that's really bad.

Even if you isolate yourself you will still have people deciding about your internet, your pc, what you can do and so on.

Instead if you partecipate, even by discussing politics, it's a step to steer the boat in your favor.

Yep, I used to try and ignore politics, but then leftist concern trolls infiltrated my online communities and now harmless banter is seen as "toxic behavior" and everyone has to pretend to be nice to eachother, trying to have fun or just messing around is banned because someone might get offended everyone in in one hundred friendly interactions. There seems to be a massive global ideological war happening right now, and ignoring it doesn't make it go away.

It really has less to do with politics and more to do with the demographic and culture of Holla Forums and how it's evolved.

The problem is multi-faceted:
1. Being anonymous - truly anonymous - is hard and makes everything a chore.

Everyone is constantly being fingerprinted. Whether it's your IP on the site, your posting style, your political leanings, how you act, how you react, etc. Being truly anonymous is extremely hard work these days and the "anonymous" community, by and large, go out of their way to ridicule and exclude those who want more anonymity. Just look at the "Tor poster automatically equals poor quality" meme and how you can't post images over Tor. The excuses behind these things are simple enough, and in some cases completely justified, but the large majority of the time it's shitposters shitting on their fellow anons for no other reason than because they are low hanging fruit. As time goes on, I no doubt expect to see more heavy-handed restrictions on anonymity on chans especially.

2. Having unfettered, unbiased fun is considered a sin on most chans today.

Look no further than how Holla Forums conducts itself on a regular basis. If your posting style, meme or ideology fall outside what they consider acceptable then you might as well expect a ban or general shunning in the thread. I use Holla Forums because it is large and no doubt everyone who reads this will have gone there at some point, but this problem is a global problem in chans. Even Holla Forums has a particular "acceptable posting style", which is usually the "le randum humur!!!!!!" posting style. Those of us with more dry senses of humor will be out of luck on Holla Forums in general.

It's also becoming a problem where anons are analyzing posting style to go out of their way to avoid you. It's not a commonplace occurrence, but it happens and often enough that I have no doubt the popularity of this method of avoiding people you don't like will only grow in popularity.

3. To really have fun on a chan, you also need a social media account of some sort.

Whether it's twitter, facebook, twitch or something else, to really appreciate the kind of shitposting occurring in today's average chan discussion you need to also have a social media account. Whether it's raiding facebook to troll the libtards or just sharing a particularly funny moment to spur conversation, social media is an implicit requirement in chans today.

4. The world just isn't fun at the moment.

I don't know if you noticed, but ever since Trump ran for president things have been getting progressively more tense. It's as if the entirety of human society has a collective stick up their ass an no amount of friendly ribbing or some such will fix it. Even with his nomination and subsequent election, things have not gotten less tense.

Don't believe me? Stop for a moment. Remember how much fun you had with something, say, 2 years ago. Recent enough to be memorable but far enough away to prevent bias. Does that moment really match up to any fun you have today? I'd wager it doesn't, even if it comes close.

and finally 5. Newfags abound

The recent flood of newfags has diluted the pool of users with actual chan history to have fundamentally shifted the balance from the fun-loving devil-may-care attitude of chans of old to this new style which, frankly, I couldn't explain if I wanted to. Suffice to say, that if you enjoyed the culture of yesteryear chans, you will probably have a hard time adapting to chans today. If not outright hate it.

The communities I find that seem to be immune to leftist concern trolling, just seem to end up falling to the alt-right meme. Where they still end up banning things that don't need to be banned for reasons just as dumb as leftist moderation.
