In the early 20th century, to drive a car you needed to know enough about how it works to repair it when it broke down. In the 50's you could take your car to a mechanic, but there was also a thriving car culture because the engineering was easy to understand and accessible with hand tools.

Tablets are the perfect example of this. They're toys. It's impossible to do anything with them, without downloading some specialized, hand-holding "app". You can't even save a webpage for offline viewing on android without getting some special program.

So now what does the rest of the population (non-farmers) do? Other jobs. Amongst them are architects, construction workers, doctors, factory workers, mechanics, miners, ""engineers, programmers"", etc, etc…

The non-farming population doesn't need to know how to farm because other people can do that for them. In turn, the farming population doesn't need to know how to work on a construction site or in a factory, they don't need to know how to treat medical patients, they don't need to know ""how to assemble a computer or program"". If you called your doctor right now and asked him if he knows how it works and he told you he had no idea, would that make him any less qualified to be a doctor? There was time that HP made great things. One in particular, the HP-71B calculator came with excellent user documentation. But it was also possible to buy techincal documentation including schematics of the hardware and source code for the program ROM. Obviously they cost a fair bit, the actual calculators were around $500, a fair bit of money back then. But good fucking luck trying to do it now.

Are they? Almost nothing you can do these days lets you work with bare metal. You've got memory management with C/C++, but it's basically just using malloc/new. Most people reckon it as a type of magic. If you really want to be computer literate, you've gotta learn some kind of ASM and learn what the hardware is doing.

Kids, I recommend starting with 6502 for the Atari, NES, or something. It's an easy language to learn, and the general ideas are directly applicable to more modern processors. By the time you're through, you'll be able to read binary/hex, and that will really come in handy when you start working with 32/64-bit systems. :)

My god, this drives me nuts. I've tried to show three different women how to use torrents and they always get frustrated really quickly and say that they "Don't get this complicated computer stuff". My best friend taught me how to torrent when we were about 14 (this would have been in 2006/2007), and I was show in about ten minutes how to do it and I've never had to be shown anything again on the matter. When it comes to torrents, I still don't understand how someone can't grasp the most barebones basics there is to it and that's "lotsa seeders good, lotsa leechers bad", you could explain this to a child and they could understand it. That being said, one of my friends taught his girlfriend how to download torrents and 2 days later she somehow managed to get a virus on her computer, so from that I've concluded that if someone needs something it's best if I find it, download it and install it myself.
