It's tragic that Kono Suba is a light novel. I mean even To Aru no Index had some allegory, some deeper thoughts but still it was surface teen level and you can't even expect that from other LNs.
I mean Kono Suba is about a teen that died wasting his teens doing mindless surrogate activities rather than use his limited in time youth (ie. playing vidyer). But then a goddess give him a choice, heaven, with its eternal peace and platitude or a world akin to a video game. Wouldn't a hikki-neet that did nothing of his life want to do nothing of his afterlife by going to heaven? Logically he would but he rather choose the alternate world where he has to save the people from a demon king, in this action he demonstrates he was not at all content with doing nothing of his life, a video game world where normally you are guaranteed success if you put serious effort is much more appealing.
You got to understand this basic notion that seems to be unconsciously displayed, just like the average person, he does nothing, but he does not want to do nothing, he does nothing because you either get given everything on a plate, or the rest is outright impossible to do with any kind of effort, forcing you to do nothing. To remediate this people will adopt a surrogate activity like video games which is the easiest to pick up, and in those video games you do things where you put real effort and gain something by your own will and skill.
It's really interesting that he's been put in a video-game like world instead of just a fantasy world. I mean look at people, some get great fulfillment by climbing a mountain, but there is no video game about climbing mountains (Skyrim), because you don't need to, you can cut this crap and get straight to the dragon-killing, virtual dragon-killing and mountain climbing are both indirect surrogate activities made to you make you think you did something, a video game about climbing a mountain would be doubly indirect, a surrogate activity about a surrogate activity. In Kono Suba it's escapism into escapism, making the concept even more blatant.
I just wish there would be amid all the fanservice and mindless action some drops of thoughts here and there about this concept, the west doesn't have as much suicide only because we in greater proportion practice those surrogate activities to give us the impression of power in our hands. Although, with our greater Freedom we do sometimes feel we can apply power to get a reward, in other word, serious effort to get something that is not a useless medal/trophy but still that is not the norm, and that is the cause of so much waste and inactivity, the reason why people do not want to die, or want to die without having done anything, is because we do not apply our power to the real world, only in surrogate activities, we see no opportunity, or everything is given to us by society, it's either "I can't die I'm not satisfied" or "I'll die now I'll never be satisfied", so people want to live eternally which is ridiculous, you want to be unsatisfied for all time so you can practice your half-satisfying surrogate activities, which look more and more like what fetishes is to sex, for ever.
Take Guts for example, would be he satisfied enough to accept death or physical decrepitude due to old age after killing Griffith? Of course he would, if he did with his own hands, biggest dick move Griffith could do is hand himself on a plate.
