Good Webcomics

Do they exist? Or is the whole 20-year old medium filled with nothing but the most irredeemable trash. Awful art, painful writing, and the worst manifestations of Jacobinism seem to be the norm when it comes to these serialized monstrosities. Modern printed comics are shit, to be sure, but the webcomic takes it to a whole new nadir. Perhaps there are some diamonds in the rough out there, but after a whole year of lurking Holla Forums I'm beginning to lose hope.

hit or miss

sometimes good webcomics either day unfinished or, as the creator ages and gets on with his/her life, their updates became more and more sporadic

I know of one. Forgot the name at the moment. It's about a girl who can do anything. She even shrank down to fight/cooperate with ants. She can transform. It's complete unlike most webcomics. Maybe someone knows what I'm talking about from the few descriptions I can muster.

Amercian webcomics seem to fall into that same pitfall, unlike the korean webtoons that keep to a consistency and actual finish whether on good or bad terms. Webtoons came after the webcomics boom, right, so why isn't there a legitimate business that isn't just individualistic or am I missing something? I don't follow current webcomics or trends to know who the major players of it are anymore.

How do they live with themselves?

Minus by Kiwis By Beat. Now defunct but it's been archived. Good shit.

They don't know that they're bad, and/or they have fanboys that constantly tell them that they're good when they're not.

Is Holla Forums a good place to ask for constructive criticism? I want to start up a webcomic, and I have story ideas and some developing art chops, but I'm not quite sure where to start. I want my first page to be at least acceptable, I'd never want to start anything public on a bad note.

We're usually pretty good for that to be honest, but keep in mind the fact that this is an imageboard.

Try the writefag thread.

They exist, but like most things they don't pop up often in discussions for a lot of reasons. And to be fair, most webcomics at this point are made by either aspiring amateurs or "established' amateurs. Of course most of them are going to be shit.

???

My biggest fear as a creative type is that one day I'll make something popular and I'll watch my beloved creation devolve into Facebook memes and tumblr AUs. How do I prevent this from happening?

That's your greatest fear? That your work will be widely enjoyed, by the foolish and the wise alike, and that you'll become wealthy?

Not that you'll make something you're really proud that simply gets lost in the noise and is never be seen by anyone outside of a small handful of people who stumble upon it by accident?
Not that you'll start creating, then slacken off a bit going from updating three times a week to two? Then miss the occasional day? Then start missing entire weeks until you finally put up the "hiatus" splash page - the tombstone of a never to be finished work? pic related
Not that you'll never create anything at all, never getting beyond the talking and thinking about it stage?

You don't, as you don't have control over how people will react to your work. And you never will. Accept that and use it as motivation to get shit done.

If it happens, it happens (as unlikely as it is). The best you can do is not let it get to your head and let the fame (or fans) influence and restrict you.

...

Will your work contain some variety of shipping bait, potential for ocs and DEEPEST LORE? If it doesn't then you're pretty safe

I'm too autistic for this to happen. Writing and drawing take up a designated segment of my weekly schedule, I start to freak out if I don't get things done in their allotted time. I'd never let myself get to that kind of stage.

I don't want to do this for money or popularity. I just want to tell stories, that's all I've ever wanted to do since I was young. As long as someone sees what I've done, as long as it's out there for someone to find, even accidentally, then I'll be happy for it. If I wanted to do this for money or fame, I'd be putting more effort into working in published comics, not that a cis white male like me would get a job in the industry at the moment.

My greatest fear is that I will pour my heart and soul into a work and that despite all of the depth and intricacies of the story I try to put in, it will only ever be appreciated for surface value things like a funny face or a single memorable line.

There's Endtown. It's really good, it has his lows but the good things compensate that

Also, it updates regularly

You gotta take a "If you build it they will come" mentality about these things. Do what floats YOUR boat, butters YOUR toast, blows YOUR dress up, and trust that it'll find its market.
My best advice for shilling is, create fan art for the gallery section of as many webcomics as you enjoy, and make yourself available for guest art stories.
If you enjoy a comic, chances are its fans will enjoy yours. That's how I've discovered more of the webcomics I enjoy, just through the creators networking.
So, is your strip up yet?

Anyways, webcomics I've enjoyed:

Huh, the Freakangels site is gone. Sic transit gloria mundi! Or maybe it was Wednesday.

That or they just openly don't give a shit.

I never knew Scott McCloud made webcomics. The only book that I read from him was Understanding Comics. I also read a promotional comic he drew for Chrome.

So you're like Ken Levine, and are afraid that someone might end up doing porn based on your "daughter"?

what about gunerkrig court?

I feel exactly what you feel.

Drawing porn of one of my characters is one of the highest honours a fan could bestow on my work. After all, does it not mean that someone likes my characters a whole lot?

...

he's still going? didn't expect that.

overall decent taste though

purplepussy.net doesn't seem to work for me.

tapastic.com/series/PetSuccubus

that second one is awful

Well at the very least, I don't hate it. And the other two nominees are from Tumblr (sort of; the artist is but one of the two has its own site) that tends to spell bad around these parts more often then not.

i was checking

helvetica.jnwiedle.com/
intrepidcrew.com/
thepocalypse.com/
broodhollow.chainsawsuit.com/

most of em are either dead, stopped updating or on hiatus

Blue Zombie (about a withc and her magical zombie) died unfinisehd somewhere in 2010 when the creators splitted paths

Para-Ten
10km.org/para-ten/
its kinda short and simple, but still pretty, its completed

Everafter( by Endling)
Great concept, the guy had nice art and ideas, but never wnet anywhere, there were less than 30 pages of it i think
The artist ended up getting a real work so comic never i suppose

This was the first thing that came into my mind, too, it's a shame the website went down, though.

One of the few recent webcomics I enjoyed is Scurry, great art and decent writing in my opinion. Sleepless Domain is also okay if you're into magical girls stuff, also Ava's Demon I guess. I heard a lot of good things about Gunnerkrigg Court but personally could never get into it, I can see why people would like it, though. Honestly, it's really hard to find good webcomics because you have to dig through tons and tons of garbage first and most of the ones praised by the "mainstream" turn out to be shit (see QC and DoA).

I remember reading it and I like it, but then the father comes and I don't know it started feeling really off…

Really? you actually found that panelling enjoyable?

Another thing about it is how little predictable it is, always leading to some surprises and many out of context pages

Also I recommend another interesting webcomic FalsePositive think about it as an anthology of horror stories with inspiration from Lovecraft to Twin Peaks.

...

is spinnerette considered good?

Quality varies
gets noticeably worse from the dream harem whatever the fuck it was arc

actually i take it back, it has gotten fun again

Inconsistent garbage. Fap if you want I guess.

Do gag comics count?

bjsinc.deviantart.com/gallery/56815088/Erma

thats some cute shit right there

also gotta suggest daughter of lilies

Gonna suggest some comics that I don't see anyone talk about.

nexttownover.net/?p=4

Western comic involving an outlaw with pryokinetic abilities vs a bounty hunter who appears to have been wronged by him in the past.

exocomics.com/

Simple slice of life comic about Li, a Chinese girl who lives in New Zealand with her partner Jordan and her cat Shoelace that sometimes borders onto the surreal. I'll admit that could have used a better description but even the official sites "about" page lacks one.

Eh, I grew up reading a lot of British comics, cutting my teeth on the nine panel grid probably built up my tolerance, lol.

As for Spinnerette, I respect Krow for being the last man standing out of that generation of early webcartoonists who tried mixing western and manga influences. Sirkowski, Hyung Kim, Ghastly, all his peers freaked out and self-destructed. The guy's hung in there through market indifference, fandumb, hatedumb, and one artist flat out taking the money and running. Give the man a Green Lantern ring.

There's only one webcomic you need to pay attention to and that's Tails Gets Trolled.

...

I think we're all forgetting someone.

I'm uploading on the site that is filled with shit-weird fetishes, am I doing right?

those tf2 reactions though.

One of the biggest misteries is if the author is in fact retarded or he is just pretending or he was pretending until he found that he was actually retarded

my sides

notice how he immediately bailed drawing regular comics once he chocked on patreonbux

Yes, I like it. I don't particularly care whether the author is shit, except indirectly if it affects the quality of the comic.

The fucking infuriating part about TGT is that it's well written, there are absolutely no loose ends. It's retarded and a huge pisstake on self-insert/fanfiction comics in general but it's better written than a lot of professional modern fiction I've seen.

The cocksucker even followed up on that "im going to have sex with my girlfriend so i wont be so mad" line from Sonic at the beginning with Amy explaining Sonic was just using her for sexual relief at that point in their relationship close to where it's at now in the story. It legitimately rumbles my autism that he knows exactly what he's doing when he's writing this stuff.

Its been a few years since I've read webcomics but I still have a few of the gems saved.

Wow. I wish fucking John Byrne and Chris Claremont could keep track of their plotlines like Lazerbot.

I'm convinced Lazerbot is a professional artist/writer to some degree or another and he's doing all of this fucking incognito. I'm not kidding, the story has no holes in it, none whatsoever; every hook has been followed up on, every subplot has had relevance to the story at large, he even accomplished rather subtle foreshadowing with the constant messages from each guy in Pac-Man's hero cabal telling Tails to be aware of his surroundings to warn him against Chester Cheetah.

His shitty MSpaint doodles are also generally consistent in art-quality and have visible "improvement" in style as the story goes on, and at several points he's drawn fairly well for it or gone overly-detailed when he didn't need to and then joked about it in-comic.

Lazerbot is an aspie, though, isn't he? He probably isn't retarded, just draws like that because face blindness. And the characters just seem retarded because low empathy. A retard would forget what he was doing, an aspie or autard would probably be able to keep track of all the plotlines. While still drawing like a tard and having the characters act in such wildly inappropriate ways they seem retarded.
Hehe, even Chris-Chan improved a little bit over the ten years he was active. Probably would have improved more if he did more than one issue a year.
The only artist I have ever seen who completely failed to improve over twenty years was Lea Gracie.

I still wanna know what OP thought of my picks, what kind of comics he likes, and what his own work is like.
After a theatrical meltdown over "irredeemable trash" and "Jacobinism" (LOL WAT), I challenge OP to show us his work if he's really the hero that Holla Forums deserves.
BALLS OUT ON THE TABLE OR GTFO, OP.

I was also really impressed with Carciphona but I never read much of it
carciphona.com/

Looking at the authors DA. I think he's serious. Reading his journal where he talks about quitting the comic.

Yes, Onepunch-Man bei ONE.

OP here

Some decent stuff mixed in with a lot of mediocrity, dead links, and dresden codak (lel)

I've read enough printed comics to know that genre is through and through garbage not worth the paper it's printed on. I'm desperately searching for good webcomics so I don't have to write off the whole genre altogether.

hi quality 10 minute pencil sketches amigo

do they not teach you the French Revolution where you're from? Must be a European, I guess

I don't do very much comics, give me a moment

Oh my god, you pompous oaf.
Even if you write like Shakespeare and draw like Da Vinci, you're still a wanker.

Every fucking time.

Pretty weird how a guy comic about Tails getting trolled can keep track with plots unlike other professional writters isn't? This is really bizarro world

Mind giving us a name?

nigga you wat

Comic in the picture is Helvetica, which was about a city of Skeletons. Last post from the author was about how they were going to start updating again "soon".. and that was in May.

But this has happened to so many webcomics.

There's the problem.
Unless it's comedy.

...

Keep in mind that Lazerbot's not genuine about it, TGT is a total pisstake on fanfiction in general and I flatly refuse to accept it as a legitimate work of love and autism when it features Looney Tunes characters as devil-blessed necromancers and a throwaway earless guy is both an extremely important character and a Skyrim dragonborn.

And don't forget motherfucking JACKO

Jeph "dogfucker" Jacques

Holy fuck, that's actually entirely possible.

shit taste
The creator is apparently going full tumblr with gender shit as well.

Never updating is a pretty regular schedule though.

Its surprisingly interesting how the author is doing it, they seem to be actually treating it as an illness caused by magic mind-grafting medicine bullshitin the context of the story.
Of course the characters tiptoe around it.

t. guy who read it in highschool and then forgot about it for five years until this thread of course

I think it's dead or Onstad had a breakdown or something.

If he hasn't read it in years he probably doesn't even know they got off the boat.

...

How does that affect the comic?

i completely fucking forgot that

its hilarious

I remember this one about a group of mages. One of them was a female lizard wizard and the MC was a new addition to the group.

got a link to the archive? i was only able to find the first 9 or so comics by googling it

shit, ijust reminder that was conneceted to that OC tournament back in 2008

fuck, all those people atre either gone, or deleted everything

good taste

forview makes good stuff

nmg.thecomicseries.com/

oh and here is a dead comic too

I forgot about Redd. Is there an archive to read it? I can't find the original site through Google.

fuck, the Endzone tournament, some of that shit is still on YT. but it seems its mostly Climber Vs. animations

If I start a webcomic, i'm gonna fucking bypass the
bullshit, and just upload like I normally do.

I hear Tinyraygun is good; It's pretty cute and all, the story's not terrible.
Hey now, I didn't say it was perfect.

I mean sure its a form of flatery, but I imagine that some of your more stuffy creative types it might not be considered that sort of thing. But honestly, that the fans went to the trouble of doing anything with your work after you make it shows that they really like it.

I think I'll post something later if I get around to it, it'll involve a monk punching shit.

The entire fucking comic is basically just "I was just pretending" and yet it's writing is still better than…

I need a moment to process this information.

I thought that was common knowledge by now.

From the thumbnail I thought her head was attached to a hotdog in a bun.
