The consequences of this could be numerous. Folks getting the idea that is a good place to shill, seeing that some content is getting strange traffic and is sparking controversy, getting it removed/edited, banning IPs who have ever had this place as a referer, or even serving different content based on whence a user's hails, which may be preserved indefinitely as individual-level problems.
That's a solution for the individual who knows the risk and wants to not contribute to the problem.
