The way my more politically minded friends have explained it to me, the problem with communism is that there always have to be people making sure the wealth is distributed equally, and that those people usually become corrupt. If those people don't become corrupt, the people one level below them on the foodchain make sure they're replaced by somebody that is. For an uncorruptable (or even a corrupt) person to stay in power they'd need to arrest those who disagreed with them, at which point this utopia is indistinguishable from the worst dystopia.

Any system that gives some people more power than others is open to abuse, and any system that's open to abuse will be abused.

What's equality got to do with communism? Absence of class, by itself, is not equality.

The alternative, on which capitalism relies, is an oligarchy of a handful rich and few : WASP dynasties, untouchable bankers, billionaires, etc.
