Does it have its own nodes separate from the tor network? Does it connect to ordinary .onion sites or does it have its own extension? This thing doesn't seem to have any sort of FAQ.

This. It's also terrible for people dependent on other people's internet (such as University students) because often you are unable to open the port that you need because of the Universitie's firewall.
