Regarding churches, well, they have to pay taxes like everyone else in France basically. They're buildings just like any other and when you own a house you have to pay taxes for it. Basically, the Church in France is just a citizen that gets paid for existing by people who visit it. But, to be honest, it has specific tax regimes and in many ways can have it easier here and there; there's even a few french regions that actually still enforce paying priests and stuff like that, but to be honest it regularly becomes a contentious discussion here about how they should stop.
Churches and all old religious buildings only have a historical/cultural appeal for the government, so they're not just places it forgets about and breaks down if it becomes too old, but it's not supposed to facilitate their existence either.
However, churches can have a "contract" with the state, in a way, to receive some financial help too. There are many, many conditions that allow various religions, as long as they're considered as such, to have easier finances. It's a bit too complex for me honestly.
