Let's say I'm about to lose Internet for about a year and will have limited storage as well as zero access to computer stores. My only computer will be a shitty lenovo ideapad from 2009. What should I archive off of the interwebs? I'm thinking lots of general documentation on programming languages, their respective compilers/interpreters and lots of book PDFs/ music for entertainment.

new chinese cartoons

No chinese cartoons. Zero.

Depending on where you willl be, for example in the countryside, I'd take PDFs on nature, craftsmanship in addition to the programming books you mentioned.

download books from project gutenberg/library genesis
install a stable linux distro like slackware, make sure it has the compilers/software you want/need installed before hand

This contains about 30,000 Project Gutenberg books as xz'd text files in a tarball, totalling 3.3 GB:

Download fiction by author whenever you can. Gives you a lot more reading material and doesn't take up a lot of space anyway.

If you can't find a book on torrent sites try the #bookz channel on Undernet:

Using Kiwix you can get an offline copy of Wikipedia (and related projects). It's 54 GB with images, 16 GB without. Wikibooks is 1.2 GB with images, 215 MB without, and it has guides that might be useful in places without internet, so get that too. You need special (FOSS) software to open it. I have an offline Wikipedia copy on my phone and it's very useful.

You can use wget for downloading entire sites. If you have sites that you like reading that don't have a lot of CSS bullshit or images try downloading them.

Consider upgrading your HDD if it's small. Maybe get an external HDD.

Install Debian and stock up on packages. Debian's main release is ultra-stable and has a huge package selection, so it's probably the most suitable for this.

Video material like chinese cartoons is a bad idea. Takes up an unreasonable amount of space.

Sarcasm noted.

I used debian stable last time and eventually just nuke'n paved with antergros. Luckily, I had Internet then; can't really afford to do that now.

I'm pretty sure I'll be prepared as far as environmental concerns. I guess it can't hurt to bring along some extra info.

Sorry, but I'm not really into Mexican flickershows.

I'm wondering if it's worth it to just sink in the money and buy a laptop with modern virtualization capabilities. That way, I can use the base system to run VMs that I can just clone and nuke on a regular basis.

Thanks for the link. That's going to be great.

Antergos is not the most suitable distro for situations where you can't update, but you could use it if you don't want to go through the trouble of switching.

What do you want to use VMs for? There might be less demanding options for doing the same.

Download TempleOS, it's all you need. You can spend the entire year making hymns and 16-color games.
But if you're chinese or your computer isn't amd64, then you're screwed.

I needed a minimal install, since the Internet was ~15-20kb/s. Thinking back, there were definately better options, but I didn't really put forth too much effort.
Or something for compartmentalization. I'm afraid I'll run into some kind of config scenario where shit gets borked bad and I don't have time to fix it. Then again, if I can keep from touching shit for a year, that shouldn't be a problem.

Getting a minimal Debian setup is actually pretty easy with the advanced installer.

You could make a backup of your configuration. But if you want something closer to VMs, take a look at chroots and containers. Getting them graphical takes some extra work but it's not hard.

I'm pretty comfortable with the CLI and have read up on chroots (not really containers). That may be my answer, though. I'm also hoping ZFS for Linux is mature enough by the time I leave. I've heard good things about it.

Btrfs has better support and most of the goodies of ZFS. Deduplication and transparent decompression should be able to save you some disk space.

I took ~6 months off like this back in 2013.

"limited storage" pfft. Get a >=1Tb HDD. You 'will want a large quantity of quality porn.

Things were too interesting for me to need 'educational' materials, and all the PDFs I had went unread. But at night, alone, it was beat-off time.

If you can't get a good wank, you'll get really seriously pissed-off about where you're staying in very short order.

Again, video material is just not worth the space. Get images, and maybe erotic text if you can easily jack off to that.

OP, there is a reason why you are without internet, why you are stuck with a 2009 laptop and why you can't afford a decent HDD. Don't screw yourself over again by wasting your precious time on earth with "entertainment" and dopamine degeneracy. Arbeit macht frei.

I'm doing some humanitarian work in BFE and don't really want to spend the dough for a new laptop. Now that I've sat down an thought about it, I'm just getting a new laptop. The Internet issue is just where I'm going. There will probably some satellite Internet, but it's probably going to be "official use only."

install linux
download the following:
python interpreter
python libraries for whatever you are into
get books to teach yourself the libraries you just downloaded
you are now set for any software you may need

download a text editor, emacs is better
download a 3d modeling software, blender is good
download audio recording software
download video recording software
download a game that you can enjoy for a long time without getting bored

Btrfs is a mess, the most recent example being their RAID code:
archive.is/CbvSK

BTRFS these days works reliable (RAID 0, 1, 10), except RAID 5/6. RAID5/6 were always fucked and will probably continue to stay fucked for a while.

Yep, I have my external hdd as BTRFS RAID 0, been working flawlessly for a year, but even if it doesn't I have backups on my home NAS server

Podcasts are usually pretty small and can easily be downloaded en masse via rss or wget. There are plenty of old games that don't require gigabytes of disc space available. There is a link in the share thread on Holla Forums with mega links to some linux games. Also emulators and rom packs from the pirate bay don't take up too much space and contains hundreds or thousands of games. I recommend a portable OS on a usb stick with some pdfs in case your hard drive fails.

that's not sarcasm bro, slack4life

you're going to china aren't you ?

You stock up on gen.lib.rus.ec/ (there's an i2p site) and manga.madokami.al/

By the way, I'm reading Leviathan after finishing Might is Right. I recommend both.

stock up on e-books about survival in the wild and pack a bugout bag...clearly you're not going anywhere pleasant

Speaking of offline, is there software that lets me cache Holla Forums so I can update it every few days?
