Diana Peters, a next-door neighbour who has known Mr Mair since he was aged eight, said he had severe epilepsy in childhood which prevented him working and left him needing medication for much of his life. He attended local schools but he did not go to university.

Mrs Peters rejected suggestions that Mr Mair had severe mental health problems. “I was a nurse for 40 years, I think I would have noticed,” she said. “He was meek and mild-mannered — he never gave the impression that he had this sort of violence in him, I would never have imagined he was capable of anything like this.”

The idea that he may have held racist beliefs stunned his family, especially his half-brother Duane St Louis whose father, Mrs Goodall’s second husband, was a black man from Guyana. “My brother is not violent and is not that political, I don’t even know who he votes for,” Mr St Louis, 41, said.

Mrs Peters had a similar impression of the man who inquired after her cat when she came back from the vet this week. She said: “I never knew anything about his political beliefs, we talked about our little corner of the world — about the teenagers who caused noise and trouble — we didn’t talk about the wider world.”

Mrs Peters was never invited into the two-bedroom council house where Mr Mair had taken over the tenancy of after his grandmother’s death. She was not to know that when he went to the local library, Mr Mair was allegedly researching extreme right-wing politics and ordering Nazi literature which was posted to the address and was found when police teams searched the property on Thursday.

Evidence has emerged online showing that Mr Mair had links with two far-right movements including the National Alliance, the American neo-Nazi group that inspired Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber, and has been called “the most dangerous hate group in America”.

The Southern Poverty Law Centre, a civil rights group, published invoices suggesting that Mr Mair bought manuals from the organisation in 1999 on how to make a pipe pistol and improvise munitions.
