The two things that can save Assad are 1) Obama continues to refuse to do shit 2) Russia hardline backs Bashad and forces the West to let it go. 2 is pretty damn possible, and this very fact might be why Putin recently said if Hilary is elected war with the United States is inevitable, because she will do it anyway. As you can see in this letter there are plenty of people chomping at the bit to do it, damn the consequences.

If Hillary gets in, she will pretty much attack Syria almost immediately. Wouldn't be surprised to see a massive surge in Russian military activity in the coming months to prepare.

Honestly, at least this point, the Russians should just put Iran under its nuclear umbrella or straight give them nukes. It would save them money in the long run instead of needing to intervene personally with airstrikes and now nobody would move a finger due to risk of nuclear annihilation and peace would be restored.

That already happened though. Russia sent in air support and completed their mission within a few weeks IIRC.
