Actually, slavery is not that bad from an economic point of view, along as it drives production costs down and you do not have to pay too much to keep the slaves up - in most cases it was an arrangement where the slave a was a self-sustaining farmer who worked a small field on the side of their main work and left the master with the pure profit as he did not have to look after the slave. The problems start if you have to look after the slave which is why slavery never caught on in an industrial areas as slaves do require upkeep and maintenance and it is more economic to pay pennies to a worker so he looks after himself (wage slavery) - slavery requires spare resources of land and food, and those are not as efficient as agricultural machinery, which has since caught up.
