I couldn't count the number of people I've met where their job has them carrying around sensitive personal information about other people, and yet none of the data is encrypted. Not on the laptop they carry, not on the desktop they use at their office. I've even had instances where people could log into web services for managing said personal information years after they had quit or gotten fired. Not to mention that using Windows is the worst way to protect anyone from anything computer related anyway, but most workplaces will still pick it every time. You might get lucky and they'll be using something more current than XP.

Because it's generally true, you get what you paid for. You can buy a cheap pair of shoes made in a shitty sweat shop that will make your feet hurt after walking a few hundred meters and fall apart after half a year, or you can pay more and get a pair of shoes that has been actually tested before production and has quality materials used.

However, digital goods are different. Once a digital work has been produced once it can be replicated at close to zero cost by anyone who has a computer. Imagine if you could take the best shoes in the world and make a million exact duplicates out of nothing. Software really only needs to be paid for once for the initial release and can then be handed out for free at no loss.

People seem still to be stuck in the old-world model where every individual copy had to be manufactured, so if you don't have to pay for an individual copy then it must suck. It also doesn't help that the most posterchild Free Software are Gimp and Libre Office, two programs that have an interface that looks like it has been bolted together by amateurs.
