Main difference is you can't grab your Xbox and connect to a free Xbox Live network, because it's locked down. Your PC is not locked down, and there are thousands of other websites, even Twitter copycats, that would gladly take the traffic for "free".

I'm not sure where are you trying to get at. Sure, consoles a shit, but some people grab them for the exclusives. Paying monthly fees sucks, but I can understand why they do it.
I'm saying the PC has been under continual attack since the day it first wrested the ability to carry out computation from the hallowed priesthood of the mainframe timesharing services. The problem with non-censored alternatives is that they tend to get flooded with users that make the sites look edgy or undesirable to everyone else looking in. And it's usually because they get banned from the major sites.
Part of me wants to say this happens on purpose, that the admins of major websites ban certain people knowing they'll go to the alternatives, attract shitposters, ruin the sites' reputations, and eliminate the competition.

It is dumb to consider this happens on purpose with this much convolution, though; you already determined that edgy users hurt a site's reputation, so they get banned. That's it, you don't need to go further, like "hahaha, these edgy users are ruining my reputation, but I will ban them just so they can destroy other sites' reputation!".
