I stopped going to theaters the second I discovered piracy, and that was back when I still had a CRT monitor and matchbox speakers.

I just don't watch movies anymore. Pirating is too much of a hassle for films that are mediocre to outright bad. If a movie is exceptional, I'll rent it, but otherwise I don't engage with Hollywood at all.

You have tons of leg room, since there are tables in front of you.

They are real film aficionados so they often have special events where they play old movies, have themed movie parties, invite directors and actors to do surprise post-movie Q&As, that kind of stuff. They are also really into beer so they usually have some good seasonable craft beers available.

The Force Awakens was appealing enough to men (having an attractive enough lead actress, overblowing on nostalgia, being in a genre with a long history of female leads who can appeal to a bulk of men) to carry itself. Tumblrbusters has gone full tumblrina (repellant actresses, Nu Male Hemsworth, etc.) that it won't rope in the audience that the Real Ghostbusters got. And besides, Star Wars is not only a much bigger phenomenon than Ghostbusters but has done better a job at staying relevant for the Millennial Generation than Ghostbusters.

Going to the movies is a big tradition, at least in the United States, and is in large part a social phenomenon, or something you do just to get out of the house. Also, some films like the latest Mad Max were so much better in 3D.

There are multiple culprits behind this, but the overwhelming one seems to be that Hollywood is ready to sacrifice revenue for racial & gender inclusivity, as with Star Wars and Ghost Busters.

Another minor one might be that Hollywood has also gone all-out in attempting to put Jewish actors into any role they can. A few decades ago, Jewish actors had to match their gentile counterparts. Now, it seems like there are a lot of them that get great roles that they wouldn't have gotten without nepotism.

They might not tailor make the stories yet but they film sequences in China so they can get into the Chinese market. The Chinese government limits the number of foreign films to be shown per year and you basically have to film part of the movie in China. Also they will force censorship if they don't like any political message with the movie. Skyfall had a Chinese sequence that was irrelevant to the story, as did interstellar as did one of those recent transformers movies.

All of the major Hollyjew studios are setting up shop in Shanghai so they can film and produce films in China. One of my friends is doing part of the build out for several of the studios. I think if they film and produce "domestically" (domestic to China) they can release many more movies than the foreign limit.
