No, but the answer isn't as simple as "yes or no". There's a flaw in the foundation of the question. Russia also isn't crazy enough to kick off a war with the US over Syria. And Syria isn't about ISIS. ISIS wasn't created by the US but the US did and is arming rebel groups to bring down Assad. And it's not about Assad, really, it's more about controlling Syrian gold and oil. And it's not really about the gold and oil, it's about Russia's KGB-turned-mafia fucking skillfully with US plans in the area. But it's not really about that, it's about the US struggling against Russia for regional power, which can be had by whichever country controls Russia's gas pipeline. (by controlling the countries it goes through) But it's not really about that, it's about the US having Europe's back as anti-nuke idiots in Europe prevented the creation of enough nuclear power plants, and so Europe is dependent on that pipeline.
Actually they do. Proxy wars like this have long been used to test new technologies. When the US won the first Iraq war the large part of the victory was proving Russia's export material couldn't hold snuff against the US. When the US lost the second Iraq war a large part of the loss was proving US technology couldn't stand up to a sufficiently large number of useful idiots manipulated for cheap.
