Majority of Dutch support ethnic profiling: report
Police should be able to stop people based on the color of their skin, according to survey.
A majority of Dutch citizens approve of ethnic profiling by police, according to a new poll published Sunday.
When asked if it was acceptable for the police to target people based on the color of their skin or ethnic origin in order to fight crime, 64 percent of respondents said it was.
Ethnic profiling hit the headlines in the Netherlands in May when Dutch rapper Typhoon was pulled over by police. The officers allegedly told the rapper that they had stopped him because he was a black man driving an expensive car.
Police chief Arjan Mengerink apologized and said that the officers involved are now “aware of their judgement error.”
Supporters of Geert Wilders’ far-right Freedom Party were the most in favor of ethnic profiling, at 80 percent, the report found. But approval rates were also high among supporters of Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s centre-right People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (76 percent), as well as for pensioners’ party 50Plus (also 76 percent).
At the other end of the spectrum were the Greens, the Socialists and the Labor party, at 38, 39 and 41 percent support respectively.
The poll also found that 32 percent of respondents considered ethnic profiling a form of racism.
The survey was conducted by Dutch pollster Maurice de Hond among a sample of 3,200 Dutch adults.
