Load one into hxd and search for the beginings of other data types like zip, rar, other images, other compression formats. There are no other flags to indicate this. Loading the image into an exif viewer shows that nothing is funny with the metadata (normally if there is an exploit you will notice something there generally).

They are hashing the images and then seeing how those hashes spread across internet over time using web crawlers. With that information they can build a tree of communication between communities which gives them some semi-useful intel on how information spreads. With this info they can more effectively target influential forums and poison the well with their usual disinfo and manufactured opinion.
