Apparently when it's just a joke about a man and a sexbot, it's ok to play it for humor, but when you politicize it and make comparisons to gays, then it's something that should be perfectly acceptable.

It turns out that the new candidate is actually from the future and went back in time to try to save Earth from the consequences of Nixon's extended presidency that lead to an apocalyptic robot uprising. The man was born the day the election takes place so "legally" he doesn't exist.

I don't remember what happens in the interim, but in the end he wins the election and some people are happy. During his victory speech he starts to fade away into nothing because his timeline no longer exists due to Nixon not being the president and the robots not revolting. As he no longer exists, all mentions and memories of him fade away as well. Nixon is then inaugurated as president because he actually came in first (after the time fun stuff).

The message at the end is "it doesn't matter who you vote for, Nixon always wins"
