Take a look at VR right now and it's as locked down a platform as they come. You can sell VR experiences outside of it but good luck having your customers jump through dozens of technical hurdles to get it working. Oh and a month later add another set of hurdles for every VR walled garden out there as a mandatory update breaks compatibility.
This isn't hyperbole or a dire prediction of what might go wrong, it happened less than a month ago with Oculus to block the Revive 'hack'.
Every platform requires you to agree to the terms of their SDK, they don't like you or your VR program and say goodbye to having it work with 99% of headset owners when the newest update comes out. Oh and you're not allowed to mention their branding or distribute anything made with their tools either as your rights have been revoked. And even if there was a foolproof and legal way to get it to work there's the commercial game engines that can revoke your rights to distribute anything made with it. Making something for VR with entirely free tools that don't have restrictive licenses is practically impossible.
Not when everything has constant mandatory online checks. By the time they break the old protection a newer update will be available to counter it.
I hate to be a pessimist about an incipient virtual realm but the only place where you'll see VR content made outside this digital prison is on sites like these that have a strong contingent of FLOSS users and boards like Holla Forums and maybe >>>/vir/ if it's still around.
This is why VR isn't exploding like the internet did, there's no freedom at all by design.

Virtual Boy isn't VR you moron. It's basically just a stereoscopic Gameboy inside a viewer that you look into. If you move your head around nothing happens. You wouldn't get a fully surrounded view, let alone be able to move around a 3D space.
VR isn't a gimmick, especially when done properly like the Vive.

No, its because content is capital-intensive to produce and you need a "killer app" to tip sales of the hardware to consume it. There's no netscape or Lotus 123 to make it big yet, and unlike consoles, until you've played one you can't even evaluate the experience. Watching a 2D clip just makes you think "meh more CoD shite"
VRs problem is that 1080p is good enough for your average wanker. It was pron coming out on VHS not Betamax (tapes were cheaper to produce, though lower quality), that set the standard for that market.
