Someone posts a bounty, people can add money to increase the size of the pot, and whoever provides the information gets most of the money that's raised.

2. They were more rash and open with their fuckups than any other target, culminating in…

After some layoffs, corporate re-structuring, and at least $1M sunk as a direct result of Gamergate targeting their ads, they were in a position to get seriously wrecked by Hogan's lawsuit, in addition to others.

An additional note: IGN was part of newscorp, and Murdoch owns other media outlets that have slandered GG in the past, particularly in Australia, Italy and the UK.
