Read the original (translated) sources (of which there are way too many to list), or read historical/philosophical accounts that sum things up and points at a bunch of primary sources.

You could also read Gethin's The Foundations of Buddhism, which is published by Oxford University Press.

Historically, you'll want to read about the original Buddha (see What the Buddha Taught by Rahula), then the Abhidharma school (read this: abhidhamma.org/dhamma_theory_philosophical_corn.htm ), then the Mahayana school (see below). These are all the original Indian schools, and multiple other schools were founded within the two latter ones, e.g. madhyamaka, theravada, etc.
