Works better in formation fights and works better with spears. In a melee scenario without a shield, stabbing will not be the best thing you can do with a sword unless both of you have short weapons, which in that case stabbing gives the most reach. Otherwise you risk overextending yourself. As for how to use machetes in an enclosed space, refer to falchion fighting. But as says, better bring a spear to a sword fight if you're that focused on stabbing.
Or you could learn to fashion halberds, partisans or glaives. They were the poor man's answer to a trained swordsman.
