If you are interested in science then stop and think about your question and try to answer it yourself.
If that didn't work then realize "science communicators" are an important link between the actual scientists and the general public despite not directly contributing to discoveries themselves

Most public speakers who are actual well respected scientists are either dead or not very good at talking to the general public, thus these science communicators like user calls them are necesarry to keep the general public interested in science
but why does it matter what the general public is interested in?
I think a better term is ambassador.
Because money doesn't grow on trees.
Because the general public vote and politicians say and do whatever they think will get them votes.
If the general public is excited about science then they will be less likely to vote for a politician that want's to slash science funding.
Because if no one knows about it no one will aspire to become a scientist aswell, so eventually we will have an extremely well literate and advanced class, and a bunch of dumb idiots who cant do jack shit with their lives
Kinda the same problem was why socialism was invented, at first everyone was kinda the same and noone owned considerably more than the other, then when everything got larger and more intricate, people could start making more money and such we got gigantic differences between the classes

I used to try and create chaos in my school but it never worked out (Writing provocative grafiti on bathroom stalls, trying to set groups up against eachother, spread weird notes and signs around to make people feel like theyre in a surrealist dream)
I still try to do these things now that im in college but its not nearly as much of a closed social bubble
