Since 1978 my uncle has worked in Nigeria, on and off in the oil business, for twenty years - in Lagos, Edo, Delta and Rivers States, and I can assure you that from what he told me the command of the English language in much of Nigeria, is far superior to the level you found in most British state schools - even deep in the jungle. The Christian Churches have a large influence on education, and for most Nigerians, a sound education is the way out of poverty. They are thus highly motivated, unlike much of the intrinsic British youth, who feel entitled to everything for nothing, and spend their precious youth, on mindless computer games.
Discipline in their schools is absolute, disruption is not tolerated. They are there to learn, and they learn fast, at a tenth of the cost of money lavished on the British state education system. The old British GCE 'O' level syllabus, is prevalent across many of the schools, and is far superior to the dumbed down GCSE 'taught' by the low standard NUT, politically correct, left wing apparatchicks, who ply their trade, out of state supplied comics, skimming over the surface of subjects.
Hard cover books, and study in depth are still the staple in Nigeria, as they are across many of the former colonies. British kids no longer read books, and it shows. On entering the world of work, all too many are incapable of stringing four words together without an 'f' in the sentence.
I have witnessed the low calibre and poor command of English, of recent British engineering graduates first hand, such is the lapsed state of current British education, they are simply no longer prepared, for competition in the wider world.
